  • The Elephants Are Still in the Classroom
    Oct 6 2026

Completed assignments, quiet classrooms, and good grades, but who is actually doing the thinking? In this episode of The Road to an Effective Classroom Environment, Dr. Lashawnte McCray-Sarvis revisits Will Richardson’s “9 Elephants in the (Class)Room That Should ‘Unsettle’ Us” through the lens of today’s schools.

Explore student engagement, student voice, artificial intelligence in education, meaningful assessment, and making learning visible with practical examples from elementary classrooms and career and technical education. Teachers and school leaders will leave with one challenge: examine a familiar practice, make a purposeful adjustment, and check whether it improves student learning. This is an original episode inspired by Will Richardson’s 2016 article, with updated research and Dr. Lashawnte's leadership and CTE perspective.

  • When Doing Everything right Still Feels Wrong: Special Episode
    Sep 29 2026

What happens when you’ve checked all the boxes—earned the degrees, built the career, taken care of everyone, achieved the goals, and become the woman everyone can depend on—but something still doesn’t feel right?

Maybe you’ve been calling it burnout.

But what if you’re not burned out? What if you’re misaligned?

In this special episode of The Road to an Effective Classroom Environment, Dr. Lashawnte McCray-Sarvis opens an honest conversation for high-achieving women especially women over 40 who are successful on paper but increasingly exhausted by maintaining a life that may no longer fit who they’re becoming.

This episode is a preview of Dr. McCray-Sarvis’s upcoming masterclass, “You’re Not Burned Out. You’re Misaligned: Why High-Achieving Women Over 40 Feel Exhausted Even When They’re Doing Everything Right,” presented at the Top 100 Most Powerful Black Women Summit.

No checklist. No five-step solution. Just an invitation to consider one powerful possibility:

Maybe you don’t need to become better at carrying everything. Maybe it’s time to decide what still deserves to be carried.

🎙️ You’ve got the keys. I’ve got the mic. Meet me on the road.

  • Beyond the Badge: From Research to Practice: Building Safer Schools Through Competence, Connection, and Preparation
    Sep 11 2026

What do we do with what we know?

In the fifth and final episode of Beyond the Badge: Rethinking School Safety Through Social-Emotional Competence, Dr. Lashawnte McCray-Sarvis moves the conversation from research to action and challenges educators, administrators, School Resource Officers, and district leaders to reconsider what creating a safe school truly requires.

Throughout the series, listeners have explored the role of School Resource Officers, adult social-emotional competence, relationship building, de-escalation, restorative practices, and research surrounding SRO preparation and school safety. Now, Episode 5 brings those ideas together with practical recommendations schools and districts can use to strengthen their approach to safety.

Dr. McCray-Sarvis examines key areas for action, including intentional SRO selection and training, administrator-SRO partnerships, professional development for school staff, student-SRO relationship building, crisis-response and de-escalation protocols, restorative practices, data monitoring, and ongoing evaluation.

But the conversation extends beyond the SRO.

Teachers, administrators, counselors, support staff, and other adults all contribute to the emotional climate of a school. Their communication, emotional regulation, decision-making, relationships, and responses during difficult moments can influence whether a situation escalates or moves toward resolution.

    The central message is clear:

Safer schools require more than security measures. They require adults who know how to recognize, communicate with, respond to, and de-escalate students.

Episode 5 closes the Beyond the Badge series with a challenge for every school and district:

“The question isn't simply whether we have an officer in the building. The question is whether every adult responsible for safety has the competencies necessary to create it.”

Beyond the Badge is a five-part special series of The Road to an Effective Classroom Environment, bringing research, leadership, relationships, and practical strategies together to rethink how we create safer and more supportive schools.

    Connection Before Crisis.
