**The Power Goes Out, but the Worship Goes On!**

What happens when the lights go out in the middle of Sunday worship? At Family Church in Van Alstyne, Texas, a surprise power outage turned into an unforgettable morning of acoustic worship, a sermon by flashlight, and a reminder that the church is about people, not technology.

In this episode of *The Righteous Brothers Podcast*, Mike Shaw and Pastor Jonathan Yates reflect on a message from guest pastor David Jordan about relational evangelism and the importance of investing in others.

They explore how genuine friendships, hospitality, generosity, and simple acts of kindness can open doors to meaningful conversations about faith. Along the way, they share personal stories, plenty of laughs, and some thoughtful insights about sharing God's love without pressure or hidden agendas. They also discuss why investing in someone is never wasted, even when we don't see immediate results.

  • Relational Evangelism, Part II: Intercede
    Oct 10 2026

Mike Shaw and Pastor Jonathan Yates continue their conversation on relational evangelism, focusing this week on the importance of intercession.

After identifying the people God may be calling us to reach, the next step is to pray for them intentionally. Mike and Jonathan talk about what prayer really is, why listening matters as much as speaking, how prayer helps align our will with God’s, and why Christians should be praying specifically for people who don’t yet know Christ.

They also explore how to discern God’s direction, the importance of grounding prayer in Scripture, and why prayer isn’t simply asking God to give us what we want. Along the way, Jonathan shares how prayer and God’s guidance played a role in the journey of planting Family Church.

It’s a practical and personal conversation about making prayer a priority, investing in the people God has placed around us, and trusting Him to open the right doors as we seek to share our faith.

As always, Mike and Jonathan mix biblical truth with plenty of humor, tangents, and real-life stories as they continue turning Sunday’s truth into everyday righteousness.

  • This is Us - Relational Evangelism, Part 1
    Oct 2 2026

Mike Shaw and Pastor Jonathan Yates continue Family Church’s This Is Us series with a conversation about relational evangelism—sharing your faith through genuine relationships rather than forced conversations.

Using the examples of Andrew and Philip in John 1, they explore how simply inviting someone to “come and see” can have a lasting impact. They also discuss identifying and praying for people in your life, recognizing opportunities to share your faith, the unique challenge of reaching family members, and why evangelism should increasingly become a natural outflow of a life following Christ.

Plus, what does Where’s Waldo have to do with sharing the gospel? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

A practical conversation about relationships, intentionality, prayer, and helping people take their next step toward Jesus.

  • This is Us - Radical Love for Your Neighbor, Part 2
    Sep 18 2026

Mike Shaw and Pastor Jonathan Yates continue their conversation about what it means to show radical love for our neighbors, building on Jesus’ parable of the great banquet.

They look at the people who received the original invitation—and the excuses they made—as a warning about allowing even good things like work, family, sports, money, technology, or personal comfort to become more important than obedience to God. Mike and Jonathan also talk about recognizing what really has mastery over our lives, making room for quiet time with God, and why Christians often hesitate to share their faith because they fear how others might respond.

The conversation turns to the people churches can unintentionally overlook: the unchurched, the marginalized, people with disabilities, and others who may not fit naturally into our usual social circles. Jonathan shares the story of David and Mephibosheth as a powerful picture of loving someone who can offer nothing in return—and treating someone the world considered insignificant as a member of the king’s own family.

Mike and Jonathan also ask a challenging practical question: If someone with significant special needs walked into Family Church this Sunday, would the church truly be prepared to welcome and serve that person and their family? From accessibility to ministry involvement, they discuss the need for churches to intentionally grow beyond comfortable “holy huddles” and live out Jesus’ call to serve “the least of these.”

Along the way, there’s the usual assortment of Seahawks jokes, Jets abuse, spam calls, SportsCenter confessions, cake resistance, and the realization that even posting a podcast could apparently become an idol.

The episode closes with a celebration of Family Church’s one-year anniversary in Van Alstyne, upcoming ministry opportunities, and a preview of the next installment in the series: loving your enemies.
