This is the second half of the oral history of Bernard Nussbaum

In this episode, we listen to the oral history of Bernard Nussbaum, the number 2 man on the House Judiciary Committee Staff that oversaw the Impeachment Inquiry into Watergate and President Richard Nixon.

While you have to read between the lines, the message is clear. Nussbaum doesn’t like the Special Prosecutors Office and harbors real concern about that office’s ability to wreak havoc on the system.

Though he defends the Watergate Special Prosecutors Office . But It does beg the question, if none of the abuses done be Ken Star had happened yet when Nussbaum argued so vehemently against President Clinton creating an office to investigate the Whitewater Scandal, that he warned Clinton of the enormous damage the office could inflict on him and his administration, why did he feel that strongly about it.

In this oral history you see what Nussbaum learned and came away from the Watergate investigation.

The Special Prosecutor and Special Counsel offices are a dangerous office and not because they find the truth but because they are given the power and incentive not to do so.

This is an extraordinary interview and provides a powerful underpinning to the charges now under review at the Justice Department that Richard Nixon and many of the other defendants of Watergate may have been treated horribly unfairly.

This is a surprise oral history. It is candid and at times very sympathetic to President Nixon for which I was surprised.
it also had moments where you get a sense that she may not have agreed with her over all bosses decision to collate and not investigate the materials they had received. It’s not as pronounced as it will be in the Nussbaum oral history later but I do think you will sense she was in his camp on this subject.

I think these oral histories are even more insightful now as the Department of Justice has officially begun to relook at Watergate and the material our show got out to the public is now being examined.

Nixon Maxxing is all the rage with Generation Z. It has led to the Renaissance of Richard Nixon really taking hold, and it went viral in June when Vice President J.D. Vance spoke out about how Richard Nixon was treated for all the world to hear.

It got a lot of attention.

We here at this podcast are very proud to have played an early role in the renaissance we see taking hold now across the nation with the first generation who have not been skewed by the full out effort of the Democratic Party and its liberal allies in the media, to damage the reputation of Richard Nixon.

A new day seems to be here, and we plan to spend the new season of The Richard Nixon Experience, delving into why and how and aiding it all along. This episode we look at the evidence that Nixon was the victim of forces within the government bureaucracy to topple his administration, and we listen to the speech by Vice President Vance at the Nixon Library, who was actually there to discuss his new book, and how his remarks set a fire under the trend of Nixon Maxxing.

  • Richard Nixon stars in Episode 429 BOB DOLE THE LIFE THAT BROUGHT HIM THERE (Part 10) WATERGATE

Episode 429 – Bob Dole: The Life That Brought Him There (Part 10)
    Watergate

Part 10 takes listeners inside one of the most seismic political crises in American history — and does so through the eyes and voice of Bob Dole.

As the Watergate complex break-in spiraled into a constitutional confrontation, Washington changed overnight. This episode weaves together archival news coverage and oral history reflections to recreate how the scandal unfolded in real time — the investigations, the hearings, the shifting political ground, and the growing pressure on President Richard Nixon.

At the center of it all is Dole’s perspective: what he believed as events developed, how he interpreted the mounting revelations, and how he navigated the political and personal stakes during a moment when party loyalty, institutional responsibility, and public trust were all colliding.

Listeners will hear not only the immediacy of the crisis as it broke, but also Dole’s later reflections — shaped by decades of hindsight — on what Watergate meant for the presidency, for Congress, and for the country. His retrospective insights add depth and nuance, revealing how time can reshape understanding of even the most explosive events.

Part 10 is both a historical reconstruction and a personal reckoning — a look at Watergate not just as a scandal, but as a defining test of leadership, loyalty, and constitutional order, told through the experience of a man who lived it from inside the Senate chamber.

Episode 428 – Bob Dole: The Life That Brought Him There (Part 9)
    Out as RNC Chairman

Power in Washington can rise quickly — and shift just as fast. Part 9 explores the dramatic turning point when Bob Dole’s tenure as chairman of the Republican National Committee comes to an abrupt end and George H. W. Bush is brought in to take the helm.

Through a series of revealing phone conversations, listeners are taken inside the political maneuvering at the highest levels of the Nixon White House. We hear the tone, strategy, and personal dynamics in calls between President Richard Nixon and Bush, as well as between Nixon and Dole, offering a rare window into how leadership decisions were made during one of the most volatile periods in modern political history.

This episode examines not just the mechanics of Dole’s removal, but the broader political context surrounding it — a moment when the administration was increasingly consumed by the unfolding Watergate complex scandal. Ironically, stepping away from the RNC chairmanship may have distanced Dole from the day-to-day political machinery that would soon be engulfed in controversy.

Part 9 captures the tension, loyalty, and hard political realities behind a pivotal transition — showing how a setback in the moment may have altered Dole’s long-term political trajectory and spared him deeper entanglement in one of the defining crises of the twentieth century.
