Since 2018, former film school friends Gali, Devlin, Patrick and Matt have tried to distil the essence of their myriad bleary, late night, free-flowing, probably bullsh*t-laden formative movie conversations almost 20 years ago, as they cast their eyes back to former favourites, cult curiosities, and ubiquitous cultural trash alike.

  • The Frighteners (1996) - Episode 151
    Oct 20 2026

“When a man's jawbone drops off it's time to reassess the situation.” Gear up with us for the Halloween season with Peter Jackson’s 1996 Hollywood studio debut The Frighteners.

When unhappy architect Frank Bannister blacks out drunk at the wheel, only to awake after his wife has died in violent, suspicious circumstances, he wastes away his time in the unfinished shell of the house he was building for her, making ends meet by utilising his trauma-induced ability to see into the spirit world by using a squad of ghostly acquaintances to perform sham exorcisms for money. But when victims of inexplicable deaths start piling up bearing a number carved into their foreheads - just like his late wife - Frank finds himself investigating a supernatural mystery in which he is increasingly considered the prime suspect.

Marking the last movie leading man performance from Michael J. Fox, alongside a stacked cast of quirky genre legends (Dee Wallace, Jeffrey Combs, and the original TV Gomez Addams, John Astin), Jackson brought his Kiwi Splatter sensibilities to the attention of Robert Zemeckis, who saw potential beyond the Tales from the Crypt episode it began life as. Join Gali and Patrick as they talk Busey Jr., museum mummy interference, and death by numbers.

  • A.I. Artificial Intelligence (2001) - Episode 150
    Sep 17 2026

“I can never go to sleep. But I can lay quietly and not make a peep.” Our Steven Spielberg season continues with the disquieting 2001 science fiction epic A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

In the near future, in a post-ice cap melting world clinging to the vestiges of humanity’s consumer peak where procreation is carefully controlled, Professor Hobby (William Hurt) envisions a mechanical humanoid child created to emulate the one thing that has eluded technology - love. His employee Henry (Sam Robards) and wife Monica (Frances O’Connor), semi-grieving as their own child is in a cryogenic coma due to an illness, are given mecha David (Haley Joel Osment) to care for. A brutal adventure in a dangerous world ensues when David’s place in his makeshift home is threatened by the return of his flesh-and-blood ‘brother’.

A project that spent decades fomenting the mind of Stanley Kubrick, that he had sporadically tried to produce for Spielberg ever since seeing the latter’s E.T. convinced him that he was the right person to bring this adaptation of a 1966 short story to the screen, was finally put into production by Spielberg after Kubrick’s death as a tribute to his friend. We dig into the intersection between these two seemingly antithetical cinematic titans, and how themes of higher intelligences, creation and responsibility, and the painful intricacies of familial love and longing fit into their respective careers. We also talk about how sad we all were while watching it.
