While Estelle wasn’t directly punished just for being intelligent, her advanced abilities and stepping up in class did lead to school rejections and reprimands:
- Barred before enrolling: Before she was even old enough for elementary school, a local elementary school principal saw her reading articles aloud to an audience. He went to her home and warned her mother that Estelle could never attend his school, reasoning that being so far ahead of the other children would make her disruptive or a bad example.
- Reprimanded in fourth grade: When her fourth-grade teacher arrived inebriated and dozed off in the corner, Estelle stepped up to the chalkboard and began teaching her classmates the times tables. When the principal walked by and discovered her leading the class, he removed the teacher and reprimanded Estelle for "taking advantage of the unconscious teacher".
Additionally, her intellect led her to skip grades, which brought other difficulties: at a prestigious private school where she was skipped ahead, she was ridiculed by peers for wearing outdated hand-me-down clothes, and later in medical school in France, a professor publicly dressed her down for taking a spot in a male-dominated field.
