- Despite racial segregation in schools and discrimination in hospital employment, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Stanford in 1920.
- She then became a registered nurse in 1924 and pursued a public health degree in 1927.
- In 1933, at 35, she earned her medical degree from the Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, becoming one of the earliest Japanese American women to do so.
