What the hell happened to Harold Holt?
On 17 December 1967, Australia’s Prime Minister went for a swim at Cheviot Beach in Victoria.
He never came back. No body. No clear explanation. And almost 60 years later, the disappearance of Harold Holt remains one of Australia’s strangest mysteries.
Holt was an experienced swimmer. He knew the area. He had been swimming at the beach before. But on that day, in rough conditions, he entered the water — and was suddenly swept out of sight. Witnesses watched. A massive search operation began. Divers searched the water. Planes and helicopters scoured the coastline.
But Harold Holt was never found. And when there’s no body… There are always theories.
Some believed he simply drowned. Others wondered whether the official explanation was really the whole story. Was Holt secretly suffering from health problems? Was his disappearance somehow connected to politics? Could he have deliberately faked his own death?
