  • Creative Alchemy: Turning the Messy Parts of Friendship into Gold
    Oct 22 2026
Creative Alchemy Turning the Messy Parts of Friendship into Gold (S6 | E261) [TESSA] Welcome back, fellow Open Nesters! As you know, Amir and I started this journey because we refuse to accept the traditional, melancholy narrative of the “empty nest.” Instead, we chose an open nest—a life wide open to new adventures, vibrant health, expanding sexuality, and deep spirituality. This week on the podcast, we are wrapping up our friendship series with a truly special guest: my dear friend, former entertainment attorney, and creative alchemist, Jonathan Pellett. Our conversation was a beautiful reminder that opening our doors to new connections can lead to the most unexpected and rewarding chapters of our lives. Jonathan and I have an origin story that perfectly captures the unconventional spirit of our open nesting journey. We actually met through a dating site, but almost instantly, we both recognized a profound, soul-level friendship rather than a romantic spark. We bypassed the awkwardness and jumped straight into creative collaboration, throwing an incredible 50-person event in the village right in the middle of the COVID era. He quickly became like a brother in my home, effortlessly fitting in, washing dishes, and sharing our space with the comfort of a lifelong family member. CREATIVE ALCHEMY During our interview, I told Jonathan that I consider him one of the greatest community builders I know, a label he humbly pushed back against. For him, it’s not about orchestrating a formalized “community”; it’s simply about the authentic love of friendship. Whether he’s bringing together an eclectic mix of expats in San Miguel de Allende or holding space for challenging conversations, Jonathan operates on the belief that friendship is the foundational core of our human experience. He reminded me that when we drop the heavy labels and just focus on connecting with the people in front of us, a beautiful community naturally builds itself. The most profound takeaway from our chat was Jonathan’s concept of “creative alchemy” within relationships. Friendships, like any deep connection, aren’t always perfectly aligned; they have their shadows, their disagreements, and their messy moments. Creative alchemy is the active choice to take those dark, painful, or uncomfortable parts of a relationship and transform them into light and joy. Instead of walking away the moment someone triggers us or disappoints us, true friendship asks us to stay in the fire, hold ourselves accountable, and alchemize that friction into a deeper, more resilient bond. A crucial tool for this alchemy—and a beautiful gift Jonathan shared with me—is the practice of “allowing.” We spend so much of our lives trying too hard, clinging to rigid expectations, and demanding that people meet us exactly where we want them to be. What if we simply allowed people to show up as they are? When we stop forcing outcomes and release our attachment to how a friendship “should” look, we create a spaciousness that invites genuine connection. It’s about making peace with the imperfections of others and ourselves, giving everyone the grace to just be without trying to control the narrative. As we navigate this incredibly liberating season of our lives, I encourage you all to look at your own friendships through this alchemical lens. Where can you practice a little more allowing? How can you transform a moment of friction into a deeper connection with a friend or estranged family member? I invite you to listen to the full episode on The Open Nesters podcast to hear more of Jonathan’s incredible wisdom. Keep your hearts open, keep expanding your circles, and remember that our nests are only as vibrant as the beautiful souls we invite into them. • TESSA TALKS FRIENDSHIP (S6 | E260)
    Oct 16 2026
TESSA TALKS FRIENDSHIP (S6 | E260) [TESSA] Good morning, beautiful community! As I sit here with my morning cup of coffee, enjoying the soothing sounds of the ocean in Florida, I am so thrilled to reflect on the incredible journey Amir and I have shared with you all. When our kids flew the nest, rather than becoming empty nesters, my partner and I made the conscious decision to become open nesters. This simply means that our home, our hearts, and our lives remain completely open to endless possibilities, frequent travels, and vibrant new experiences. Lately, our podcast has been deeply focused on exploring relationships, and today, I am taking the microphone on my own to bring our friendship series to a meaningful conclusion by sharing a project that is incredibly close to my heart. Over the past four winters, I have poured my soul into writing a new 72-page book called The Five Doors of Friendship: Discover New Ways to Open, and I am beyond excited to finally release it into the world. Because friendship is such a vital currency in our lives, the very first door we must learn to open is the door of Play. As adults, we need to intentionally bring back the concept of the “play date” to let go, be bold, and simply enjoy the present moment. We actively practice this joyful playfulness with our wonderful friend and podcast collaborator, PJ Ewing, who constantly plays with us in the most delightful ways to help expand our show. Once we remember how to play, we can easily walk through the second door: Inspiration. This door invites us to breathe new life into our connections, allowing ourselves to be entirely uplifted by others while we actively inspire them in return TESSA TALKS FRIENDSHIP The third door invites us into a deeper, more spiritual realm: Generosity. This goes far beyond anything financial; it is about cultivating profound empathy, deep compassion, and essential forgiveness within our relationships. True generosity requires us to first establish loving boundaries and be generous with ourselves, ensuring that when we give to our friends, we do so fully and without ever feeling taxed. When two people can show up for each other in this authentic, overflowing way, it creates a bond of compassion that transforms how we see and treat one another. As our friendships mature, we inevitably encounter the fourth door, which is Value Alignment. Values are beautifully fluid; they shift and evolve as we grow, much like Amir and I have experienced in our own explorations of polyamory and the beautiful joy of compersion. Navigating this door means continuously evaluating where we truly align with the people in our lives and finding the grace to honor them for what they uniquely offer, even if our core beliefs differ. This perspective allows us to step away from hurtful gossip or judgment and instead appreciate the distinct, varied roles that different friends play in the different seasons of our lives. Finally, all of these elements culminate at the fifth door: Creative Alchemy. This is the pure magic that sparks when we collaborate, creating solutions and concepts far beyond what any of us could solve or envision at our own individual levels of consciousness. Because I want us all to continue expanding our ideas and learning together, my gift to you is giving away this entire book as a free PDF. You can download your copy right now by visiting theopennesters.com. Let’s keep collaborating in the world and nurturing the deep connections that bring us more joy, more friendship, and more love. • Make the First Move: The Art of Adult Friendship (S6 | E259)
    Oct 8 2026
Make the First Move The Art of Adult Friendship (S6 | E259) [TESSA] As my husband Amir and I always say, trading an empty nest for an open one means opening the door to new adventures, vibrant health, and endless possibilities. Now that our kids have flown the nest, we’ve found ourselves with the beautiful privilege of exploring unconventional topics, and one of the most vital areas we’ve been leaning into lately is the currency of adult friendships. Recently, we had the absolute honor of sitting down on the podcast with friendship expert, life coach, and author Shari Leid to talk about the rewarding—and sometimes challenging—process of making and maintaining friends in this open-nesting stage of life. Shari’s personal journey into this work is nothing short of inspiring. At 47 years old, she received a breast cancer diagnosis that fundamentally changed her perspective on everything. She told us that facing her own mortality forced her to ask a profound question: “If today were the last day of your life, would you be doing what you’re doing now?”. That wake-up call shifted her entire focus, ultimately leading her to transition away from her previous career as an attorney to focus on life coaching, writing, and understanding human connection. One of my absolute favorite moments from our conversation was how Shari challenged us to redefine what a true friend actually is. She made a brilliant comparison to a dog’s unconditional love, noting that a real friend listens to you, supports you, and never judges you. In our adult lives, we often overuse the word “friend” to describe colleagues, business associates, or acquaintances who simply fit into a convenient category. Shari reminded us that true friendship isn’t about having a strict checklist of conditions for someone to meet; it’s about a mutual, judgment-free bond where you can truly be yourself. To put these ideas into practice, Shari embarked on an incredible project for her 50th birthday called the 50/50 Friendship Flow. She set a bold goal to meet with 50 different women—ranging from old friends she hadn’t seen in years to complete strangers she had never met in person—just to sit down, share a meal, and learn about their unique stories. What she discovered was beautiful: women are incredibly eager to connect and share their lives, proving that even as adults with busy schedules, we all deeply crave meaningful relationships. Of course, making space for new, fulfilling relationships sometimes means taking a hard look at the ones that no longer serve us. Shari and I talked openly about the reality of toxic friendships and how it is perfectly okay to acknowledge when a relationship is broken. If a friendship feels entirely one-sided, or if someone only reaches out when they need something from their “checklist,” it might be time to respectfully let that connection go. As Open Nesters, we have the time and wisdom to curate our circles and surround ourselves with people who genuinely appreciate our uniqueness. My challenge to you this week—inspired by Shari’s wonderful advice—is to take the initiative and make the first move. We often avoid reaching out because we fear rejection, or we worry that showing our true, quirky selves will push people away. But as Shari taught us, embracing your unique “weirdness” is what actually draws your true destiny and genuine friends toward you. Step out of your comfort zone, say hello to a stranger, or invite an acquaintance out for coffee—you might just find the exact connection your open nest has been waiting for.
