  • Why Do You Coach? The Scoreboard Nobody Sees
    Oct 9 2026

Wins, championships, rankings...that's the scoreboard everyone sees. Coach Trav makes the case for the one that takes years to show up: who your players become after the uniform comes off.

In this episode of The Mental Health Playbook, host Coach Trav opens with an MPP Spotlight on former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, who recently revealed the massive Minecraft city he's been building for over a decade; a simple, unexpected way to quiet the noise that comes with life in the NFL. Your reset doesn't have to make sense to anybody else. It just has to work for you.

After an October check-in (The Simpsons' Treehouse of Horror, Halloween sitcom classics, and playoff baseball), Coach Trav recaps the 2026 WNBA awards and playoff race, and speaks on Kelsey Mitchell's candid exit-interview comments and how fans treat the athletes they cheer for.

Then he turns the episode over to coaches with one question: why do you do this? Sparked by watching a former player, a center who once struggled with his snaps, thrive at the college level, Coach Trav shares why he started coaching, what he learned from Cus D'Amato's relationship with Mike Tyson, Tony Dungy's "coaches are teachers" philosophy, Dean Smith's commitment to staying in players' lives, and John Thompson Jr.'s calm, commanding presence on the Georgetown sideline. He also opens up about his work as a program mentor at Western Governors University and why human connection is the real job...on the field and off it.

Whether you're a head coach, a position coach, a mentor, or anyone responsible for developing people, this episode is a challenge to look in the mirror: are you coaching players to win for you, or helping them win at life?

  • When the Criticism Gets Loud: Protecting Your Confidence
    Sep 25 2026

Everybody's got an opinion. Not everybody gets a vote. Coach Trav breaks down how athletes can stay confident when the criticism gets loud — and how to tell useful feedback from noise you need to release.

In this episode of The Mental Health Playbook, host Coach Trav opens with an MPP Spotlight on legendary Georgetown coach John Thompson Jr., who in 1982 pushed back on being called the first Black head coach capable of reaching the Final Four — pointing out he was simply the first given the opportunity. Two years later he won the national championship. The lesson: confidence doesn't require everyone else to believe in you.

From there, Coach Trav recaps a big college football weekend before diving into this episode's core topic — what happens to an athlete's confidence when criticism doesn't stay at the stadium anymore. He walks through why a bad game in 2026 follows you home through your phone, and lays out a practical framework for handling it: separate your performance from your identity, filter criticism before you accept or reject it, and go back to your evidence when belief starts to shake.

Along the way he looks at Cam Ward navigating year-two scrutiny in Tennessee, Justin Herbert and the Chargers' slow start under new OC Mike McDaniel, Todd Monken's response to outside commentary about the Browns, and Oprah Winfrey's rocky launch of OWN — proof that this isn't just an athlete problem.

    Topics covered in this episode:
✅ MPP Spotlight: John Thompson Jr. on knowing exactly who you are
✅ College football weekend recap: Trinidad Chambers, Darian Mensah, Jeremiah Smith & Malachi Toney
✅ Why Jeremiah Smith and Malachi Toney refuse to let anyone pit them against each other
✅ How social media changed what criticism does to an 18-, 19-, 20-year-old athlete
✅ Separating performance from identity: you can play badly without being a bad player
✅ Cam Ward, Justin Herbert, and the grace young quarterbacks don't get
✅ The filter: is it true, is the source credible, is there something I can actually do about it?
✅ Oprah Winfrey and the difference between failing at something and being a failure
✅ Own it, learn from it, correct it, release it — Coach Trav's four-step play
✅ The Mental Health Playbook journal prompt of the day

Whether you're an athlete whose worst moment went viral, a parent watching your kid absorb comments from strangers, or someone navigating criticism at work, this episode is about protecting the one voice that actually has to travel with you.

  • Make Your Reps Count: The Tom Brady Story Nobody Talks About
    Sep 18 2026

In this episode of The Mental Health Playbook, host Coach Trav opens with an MPP Spotlight on Team USA women's basketball and their FIBA World Cup gold medal run — a masterclass in veterans and young stars embracing different roles for one shared goal. He follows it with a personal check-in about a surprising new hobby that's been helping him recenter (and a long-overdue apology to Stanley from the movie Friday).

Then Coach Trav digs into this episode's core story: before the Super Bowls and the MVPs, Tom Brady was fighting for reps at Michigan and working with sports psychologist Greg Harden. That relationship shifted Brady's focus from how many opportunities other quarterbacks were getting to a single question — what are you going to do with the reps you actually have? Coach Trav connects that lesson to his own redshirt year, his work coaching running backs and offensive linemen, and why he ultimately moved into mental performance coaching full-time.
