Up on the mountain, the Law and the Prophets meet the One they pointed to, and the Father says, "Listen to Him."
Seaver Bransfield joins Chris and Emily again to read the Transfiguration in Mark, Matthew, and Luke. They also look at how John, who was on the mountain, writes, "We have seen His glory." The group notices how the human writers struggle to describe what they saw, like Mark's "whiter than anyone on earth could bleach them," and they talk about why Moses and Elijah, standing for the Law and the Prophets, appear with Jesus. Peter gets some love for blurting out his plan to build three tents when he "did not know what to say." He later remembers this moment in 2 Peter: "We were eyewitnesses of His majesty." Chris brings up the Shroud of Turin, and the group explains how Jesus' words about Elijah point to John the Baptist. To finish, they take on a hard question: how does the "beloved Son" identity from the baptism and Transfiguration apply to us?
"We are welcomed into the family of God when we follow Jesus... When God looks at us, He sees His Son and He says, 'You are my beloved.' But it's not of our own doing."

FOR YOUTH LEADERS
This story is a good chance to show students that the whole Bible fits together. You don't have to teach all of Exodus or 1 Kings, but naming Moses and Elijah and explaining who they were helps students see that the Old Testament points to Jesus. Keep your Bible in your hand while you teach. The Transfiguration also works well for a "Person of Christ" talk about Jesus' divinity. Be careful with the language of identity. God's love for every person is real, and through Jesus we become His beloved children. It is a gift we receive, not something we earn.
