  • Charlton Athletic Women 2-1 Newcastle United Women
    Jan 26 2026

Newcastle United Women fell to a first WSL2 defeat under Tanya Oxtoby, away to league leaders Charlton Athletic Women.

First-half goals from Jodie Hutton and Katie Bradley put the Addicks ahead at the break, and while an Oona Sevenius strike just after the hour mark provided United with a platform to kick on, they were unable to rescue a point at The Valley.

There were two debuts for United in London, with Kaitlyn Torpey and Ashanti Akpan coming in for Charlotte Wardlaw and Lois Joel, but they were unable to help extend the Lasses' seven-game unbeaten run in the league.

Newcastle found themselves pinned back very quickly in the first half, and a lofted ball to Amalie Thestrup at the back post forced Anna Tamminen to scramble across her line and claw her effort away.

However, Tamminen could do little three minutes later after initially saving Karin Muya's close-range effort; a goalmouth scramble saw the ball land at the feet of Hutton inside the six-yard box, and she made no mistake by firing her effort into the roof of the net.

After that initial setback, United looked to build up some possession, with their increased efforts to get forward paying off when Elisha N'Dow blocked Beth Lumsden's volley, and while the referee waved away penalty appeals, Jordan Nobbs curled an effort towards the far corner but was denied by the diving Sophie Whitehouse.

While the Lasses were pushing for an equaliser, the Addicks broke forward into the box through Muya, who was brought down by Akpan, allowing Bradley to step up and fire home into the bottom corner, sending Tamminen the wrong way.

Oxtoby made a double switch at half time, bringing on Jasmine McQuade and Freya Gregory, with the latter making a swift impact on the game when her low cross from the left allowed Sevenius to run onto the ball and pick out the bottom corner with a first-time finish on the edge of the area.

Despite Newcastle seeing the majority of the ball in the final minutes of the game and putting several dangerous balls into the box, they were unable to test Whitehouse in the Charlton goal and dropped down to fifth in the league.

  • Newcastle United 0-2 Aston Villa
    Jan 25 2026

Emiliano Buendia and Ollie Watkins both scored as high-flying Aston Villa ended their long wait for a St James' Park victory against Newcastle United.

The visitors had not triumphed on Tyneside since an infamous afternoon in 2005, when Newcastle went down to eight men and team-mates Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were both sent off for fighting each other.

But Unai Emery's men have won more points on the road than any other Premier League side for a reason this season, and they showed their mettle away from home once again.

It was the rejuvenated Buendia who opened the scoring when the Argentine brilliantly scooped the ball past Nick Pope from outside the box to silence the stadium in the 19th minute.

Watkins then sealed the victory late on when the unmarked striker headed home from substitute Lucas Digne's cross, leaving the away end singing in the rain as their side moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City.

That was the cue for a number of Newcastle supporters to make their way for the exits on a disappointing afternoon for their side, who would have moved ahead of champions Liverpool with a victory.

The hosts went close to opening the scoring when Sandro Tonali danced past three players only to see his close-range effort kept out by the foot of goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez just seconds into the game.

The outstretched Martinez also made an important save to claw away Lewis Miley's header just before half-time.

But Aston Villa had their chances, too, and Pope made fine stops to twice deny Watkins.

There was little the Newcastle goalkeeper could do about Buendia and Watkins' goals, as the visitors secured a deserved win.

  • Newcastle United 3-0 PSV Eindhoven
    Jan 22 2026

Newcastle United clinched a Champions League last 16 play-off spot following a comfortable win against PSV Eindhoven.

The home support urged their side to "write the next headline" at St James' Park as they unfurled a huge banner alongside lifesize newspaper cuttings of some of the club's most memorable moments in the competition before kick-off.

It did not take the recalled Yoane Wissa long to do just that after aggressive Newcastle capitalised on the first of a series of costly errors from the in-form Dutch champions.

Matej Kovar could only find Bruno Guimaraes with his attempted clearance and the Newcastle captain quickly threaded the ball through to countryman Joelinton, who squared it to the unmarked Wissa to coolly lift the ball over the former Manchester United goalkeeper.

After scoring his first ever Champions League goal, Wissa then turned provider to tee up Anthony Gordon as Newcastle again punished PSV for a sloppy mistake in the first half.

Slack defender Yarek Gasiorowski took a heavy touch towards his own goal and Wissa pounced to slide in and knock the ball across to Gordon, who could not miss with the goal gaping after Kovar was caught in no man's land.

Gordon, in the process, matched Alan Shearer's club record after scoring six goals in a single season in the competition.

Newcastle grabbed a third after the break when Harvey Barnes capitalised on a weak header from PSV captain Jerdy Schouten and finished clinically from inside the box after wriggling away from Gasiorowski.

The hosts counted the cost of the emphatic victory after the influential Guimaraes hobbled off with an ankle issue, but Eddie Howe's side have moved up to seventh in the standings.

With a play-off secured, Newcastle could still automatically qualify for the knockout stages if they get a landmark result against holders Paris St-Germain at the Parc des Princes in their final league phase game next week.

PSV, meanwhile, have slipped to 22nd.

  • Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 Newcastle United
    Jan 19 2026

Newcastle missed the chance to climb into the Premier League's top five after being held to a goalless draw at battling Wolves.

The Champions League-chasing Magpies were looking for a fourth straight league win for the first time since April, but lacked inspiration as striker Nick Woltemade again drew a blank.

The £69m Germany forward, who scored on his Newcastle debut against Wolves in September, now has just three goals in his past 19 games and was replaced by Yoane Wissa in the second half.

Eddie Howe's side would have gone fifth with a win by two clear goals, but did not manage a shot on target until the 85th minute - although they did move up a place to eighth with this point.

Rock-bottom Wolves are 14 points from safety and have other priorities, but have rediscovered their drive and - more importantly - their organisation in recent weeks.

While it will be too late to save them after failing to win any of their opening 19 games, there is at least growing optimism for the future under boss Rob Edwards.

Much of that comes from teenage breakthrough star Mateus Mane, who hooked a shot at Nick Pope, while Jose Sa saved late efforts from Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton.

Woltemade's goal struggles will be a growing concern for Howe - and the striker's barren spell could dent Newcastle's Champions League hopes.

Just three goals in his past 19 games is not a total Woltemade or his manager would have expected after a goalscoring debut against Wolves in September.

The German scored five times in his first eight matches after a club record move from Stuttgart in an impressive start to life in the north east.

But that confidence has ebbed away and the 23-year-old was replaced by Wissa midway through the second half after another fruitless outing.

Woltemade was not given a great deal of service, but what he did have to work with he wasted - including a glancing first-half header which he may have done better with.

He still has seven goals in 19 appearances, but if he fails to re-find his shooting boots it will harm the Magpies' top-four chances.

Newcastle had scored seven goals in their past three league matches - all wins - before coming to Molineux, but with just one by a striker (Wissa's goal against Burnley).

The Magpies did not have a shot on target while Woltemade was on the pitch on Sunday - albeit a statistic he is not entirely responsible for - and will view a stalemate against the league's bottom side as a wasted opportunity.

However, Wolves have rediscovered their fight and a point in a forgettable match was a fair result, even if Newcastle will have reasons to be deflated.

  • Newcastle United 0-2 Manchester City | Speculation of a new training ground ready
    Jan 14 2026

Antoine Semenyo and Rayan Cherki both scored as Manchester City took control of their Carabao Cup semi-final against holders Newcastle United.

Semenyo only completed his £65m move from Bournemouth less than a week ago, but the new arrival has already made a huge impact.

After netting one and setting up another on his debut, in the club record-equalling 10-1 rout against Exeter City at the weekend, the forward stepped up with a crucial opener in the first leg of this semi-final at St James' Park.

Semenyo, who later had a goal disallowed, was in the right place at the right time to convert at the back post after Jeremy Doku's cross was hooked on by Bernardo Silva.

No wonder Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe rued how Semenyo was eligible to play on Tuesday night following a rule change - despite already featuring for Bournemouth earlier in the competition.

But Newcastle's evening got worse deep into stoppage time when substitute Cherki doubled his side's advantage after lashing the ball into the net.

How Newcastle will rue what might have been after twice hitting the woodwork when the score was goalless.

Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford tipped Yoane Wissa's looping header on to the crossbar before Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes struck the bar with a rasping effort just seconds later.

Wissa also had a golden opportunity to put his side in front early on - only to scoop the ball over the bar from close range.

But it was Manchester City, the eight-time winners, who take a commanding lead back to the Etihad when these sides meet again in the return fixture on 4 February.

  • Newcastle United 3-3 Bournemouth (Newcastle win 7-6 on penalties)
    Jan 10 2026

Aaron Ramsdale saved three penalties in a dramatic shootout as Newcastle United defeated Bournemouth to reach the FA Cup fourth round.

The former Bournemouth goalkeeper came back to haunt his former side and denied Evanilson, Alex Jimenez and, finally, Bafode Diakite in a nail-biting shootout at St James' Park after the tie could not be settled in extra time.

Newcastle defender Malick Thiaw had put the hosts 7-6 up in sudden death after coolly dispatching his spot-kick.

So Diakite had to score to keep the visitors in the cup - but he saw his effort saved by Ramsdale to the sound of deafening cheers.

On an afternoon Newcastle supporters again paid tribute to club legend Kevin Keegan, who was diagnosed with cancer, it was rather fitting that this was another topsy-turvy game following the incredible 4-3 midweek victory against Leeds United.

Barnes confidently put the hosts ahead in the second half of normal time with his 10th goal of the season after latching on to Nick Woltemade's through ball.

But spirited Bournemouth responded through Alex Scott, who tapped home at the back post, after substitute Evanilson flashed the ball across the face of goal.

David Brooks then put Bournemouth in front after letting fly with a sumptuous effort from 20 yards to send Andoni Iraola and his staff wild on the touchline.

There was still time for another twist, however, and Newcastle were awarded a penalty deep into stoppage time when goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic took down Sandro Tonali inside the box.

Anthony Gordon stepped up from the spot and, though Petrovic guessed correctly, the Newcastle forward managed to drill the ball into the bottom left-hand corner to take the tie into extra time.

Barnes scored another late goal - in the 118th minute - following his dramatic midweek winner.

But this game was far from over and Bournemouth substitute Marcus Tavernier got in between Sven Botman and Thiaw to poke home in stoppage time and take the game to penalties.

Newcastle won the shootout, though, with the help of Ramsdale, as head coach Eddie Howe recorded just his second ever win against his former side.

  • Newcastle United u21 0-1 Middlesbrough u21
    Jan 10 2026

Frankie Coulson's late strike condemned Newcastle United Under-21s to a 1-0 home defeat against Middlesbrough in the Premier League 2 on Friday night.

The league clash looked to be heading towards a stalemate at Whitley Park before the young Magpies, targeting back-to-back league wins after November's 3-2 win against Burnley, fell behind in the final stages through Coulson's close-range finish.

Newcastle's youngsters were unable to rescue a point against their North east neighbours in the final stages as their winless run across all competitions extended to seven matches.

In their first game of 2026, Newcastle's youngsters almost fell behind in the opening 60 seconds as Adam Harrison's intended clearance from his own box was charged down by Layton Campbell but, to the goalkeeper's fortune, the ball bounced wide of the right-hand post.

Kyle Fitzgerald, who arrived at St. James' Park from hometown club Galway United in February 2025, completed a positive run towards goal but the Irish winger was unable to attempt a shot at goal as Jack Daley produced a last-ditch interception inside the penalty area.

Matheos Ferreira, who netted a hat-trick in Newcastle's FA Youth Cup third round win against Portsmouth last month, went close to netting his first goal of the season at under-21 level as the Ashington-born winger, who signed his professional contract with United last summer, cut inside from the left flank before drilling a venomous dipping effort wide of the right-hand post.

Harrison, named on the bench for the Magpies' UEFA Champions League clash away at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, produced an important stop to preserve United's clean sheet hopes as Rio Patterson-Powell's free-kick from the edge of the box was pushed around the right-hand post by the Ponteland-born shot-stopper.

In the second half, Harrison was alert to deny Patterson-Powell for a second time as the Boro winger advanced towards goal before his low drive was pushed away by the teenage 'keeper before Magpies skipper Ciaran Thompson blocked the rebounded attempt at goal.

The United wingers continued to prove the main vocal points in attack as Ferreira's fizzing strike from the edge of the box, identical to his first-half effort, was spilled by Connor but the Boro 'keeper was able to smother the loose ball.

Newcastle maintained their pursuit for the opening goal as Fitzgerald, who has represented Republic of Ireland at under-17 level, arrived onto Ferreira's lofted cross at the back post but his tame volley was comfortably held by Connor.

United's second-string faced a testing period from the visitors after the hour mark as Baptiste drove an effort over the crossbar inside the box before, minutes later, Finch took aim from the edge of the box after picking up the ball in a dangerous position but his curling effort from the edge of the penalty area flew past a rooted Harrison.

Alfie Hutchison was introduced from the substitutes' bench, making his debut at under-21 level in the process, and was unable to make a goalscoring impact as the Scottish striker, who arrived at the Magpies' Academy from Glasgow Rangers last summer, rose from Ciaran Thompson's in-swinging cross but the 16-year old's header was comfortably held by Connor.

Middlesbrough hit the post through Finch as the visitors capitalised on Rory Finneran's unfortunate slip towards the halfway line but despite a dangerous counter-attack, the Boro forward's effort at goal struck the outside of the right-hand post.

In the 85th minute, Newcastle's hopes of a clean sheet were dashed as Coulson fired the Teessiders into the lead as Oliver Samuels' free-kick was headed into the unamrked winger's path, who placed the ball beyond Harrison.

  • Newcastle United 4-3 Leeds United
    Jan 8 2026

Newcastle United forward Harvey Barnes scored an incredible 102nd-minute winner as his side ended Leeds United's unbeaten run in an all-time Premier League classic. It looked like the teams were going to share the spoils after Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes scored a penalty to make it 3-3 in the final minute of normal time at St James' Park. But there was still time for one final twist in a topsy-turvy game as Barnes fired home through a crowd of bodies in stoppage time to send the stadium into raptures.

It was an emotional night as Newcastle supporters repeatedly sang the name of club legend Kevin Keegan, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Keegan is one of the most transformational figures in the club's history, who left his mark as a player and manager, not least as the mastermind behind the Entertainers, who challenged for the Premier League title in 1996. So it was rather fitting that this breathless game was packed with goals, drama and some cavalier defending after Leeds eventually broke the deadlock following an error from Malick Thiaw.

Thiaw slipped under pressure from Dominic Calvert-Lewin deep in Newcastle's half and the Leeds forward threaded the ball through to Brenden Aaronson, who clinically picked out the bottom corner from outside the box in the 32nd minute.

The goal served as a jolt for sleepy Newcastle, and the hosts quickly drew level thanks to a sidefooted finish from Barnes after Nick Woltemade deftly laid the ball off to his team-mate inside the box. But Leeds were gifted the chance to restore their lead in first-half stoppage time after the tormented Thiaw handled the ball inside the area in a tussle with Calvert-Lewin. Calvert-Lewin coolly sent goalkeeper Nick Pope the wrong way to put the visitors back in front with his ninth goal of an impressive season.

But Newcastle came roaring back after the break and Joelinton headed his side level following a clever assist from captain Guimaraes with the outside of his boot. Aaronson then put Leeds back ahead once again in the 79th minute with an angled finish after Ilia Gruev pounced on a misplaced pass from Yoane Wissa to set up his team-mate. But there was still time for Guimaraes to score a penalty before Barnes struck to send Newcastle up to sixth, while Leeds remain 16th.
