The Invitation That Trapped a King
This episode explores the reign of Albert of Mecklenburg, King of Sweden, and the trap set by the Swedish nobility that allowed one man to accumulate vast power. It asks what happens when the very invitation to power is designed to weaken you.
Person: Albert of Mecklenburg
Date: 1363
Location: Sweden
Event: Coronation of Albert of Mecklenburg
Topic: Medieval Swedish politics
- In 1363, the Swedish nobility, led by Bo Jonsson Grip, sought a new king to replace Magnus Eriksson, who they felt was distracted and overextended.
- They chose Albert of Mecklenburg, who had a credible but slender claim to the Swedish throne through his mother, Euphemia Eriksdotter.
- Albert agreed to lead a military campaign against Magnus and, in exchange for the nobility's support, signed a coronation oath granting them extraordinary powers over crown lands and revenues.
- After defeating Magnus in 1364, Albert was proclaimed King of Sweden, and a stone was carved at the Stones of Mora, marking the occasion with an early use of the three-crown symbol.
- Bo Jonsson Grip, using the powers from Albert's oath, began accumulating farms and by his death in 1386, controlled 1,495 farms, representing one-third of Sweden's territory.
