The Shah Bano case exposed preferential treatment of minorities at the expense of secular principles. When the government overturned the Supreme Court's ruling in favor of Shah Bano, it was seen as capitulation to Muslim demands.

This action fueled resentment among many Indians who felt that secularism in India unfairly favored minority groups. This controversy, combined with issues like the Ram Janmabhoomi movement, helped the BJP to gain broader support, leading to their increased political prominence in the following years.
