Did you know that the specter of race war constantly haunts the minds of American Whites like a nightmare? That's at least what every European visitor had to say about this miserable country by the 1850's! The categories of slave and free, White and Black, good European and bad European, and so many more have, by the decades preceding the American Civil War, reached the end of their useful life. And yet, despite these ideas having reached peak senility, America persisted in its violence as European writers fawningly praised the freedom inherent in American blood and dismissed the other peoples of the continent as degenerate savages who don't have ideas in their damn head.
