Guided by the belief that anyone can learn to become funnier once they understand what to practice, the Funny Muscle Podcast aims to break down how pro comics get their best laughs. Comedian turned author Mike Lukas and cohost Chris Stiffler, an economics professor and open mic-er, use the game plan and concepts outlined in the Funny Muscle Book series to give listeners a better idea of how original (and funny) jokes are crafted.Copyright 2024 All rights reserved. • Add the Emotion to Your Bits
    Oct 20 2026

    “It sucks.” “I’m frustrated by…” “Isn’t it stupid that…?”

In this episode of Funny Muscle Pod, Mike and Chris explore how adding emotion can transform a stand-up bit from a funny observation into something audiences actually connect with.

Emotion (something comedians aren't always great at expressing) tells the audience why you're talking about a topic and, more importantly, why they should care.

Mike and Chris break down bits from professional comics, identifying the underlying emotion, the setup, and the humor devices that make the jokes work. And that makes the comedy nerd in me soooo happy. Wait. Is happiness an emotion, Mike? Because I think I just had one.

  • Going to the Tape
    Sep 22 2026

Comedy coaching is on full display in this episode as Mike goes to the tape to break down a recent open mic set from Chris. Like a football analyst studying game film—circling the missed blocks, fumbles, and blown assignments—Mike slows down Chris’s bit to figure out what worked, what didn’t, and where the joke left points on the field. Because great comedy rarely shows up fully formed. It takes writing, performing, bombing, audience feedback, coaching, rewriting, and then going back onstage to see if you actually fixed the damn thing. For comics, this episode is a look under the hood at that process.

  • Old-School Jokes vs. Modern Bits
    Aug 28 2026

What changed between old-school stand-up and the way comics write today?

In this episode, we compare Henny Youngman to Mark Normand, Rodney Dangerfield to Taylor Tomlinson, and Steven Wright to Nate Bargatze to see how stand-up evolved from joke-writing into bit-building.

Old-school comedy typically had an efficient structure: setup, punchline, move on. Modern stand-up is more likely to take that first laugh and keep digging by heightening the premise, adding tags, creating act-outs, character points of view and callbacks.

For newer comics, the comparison is especially useful because it makes structure visible. You can see exactly where the punchline used to end the joke and where today it often begins the bit.
