  • Kevin Ellison: 1,000+ Games, Still Playing at 47 & The Pantomime Villain | TFH Podcast #64
    Oct 28 2026
Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. Episode 64 is with one of English football's great survivors: Kevin Ellison. Kev is still playing at the age of 47, has made more than 1,000 career appearances and is aiming to keep going all the way to 50. But there's much more to his story than longevity. Kev takes us right back to his childhood in Liverpool, where he was part of Liverpool's Centre of Excellence alongside the likes of Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard before being released at 15 — something he admits broke his heart. From there came an incredible route through football. He went from working on Breck Road delivering beds, wardrobes and three-piece suites to making his Premier League debut for Leicester City at Old Trafford just months later. We discuss his long career across the Football League, his nine-and-a-half years at Morecambe, becoming the pantomime villain opposition supporters loved to hate, scoring against his former club for Newport County and running straight towards Derek Adams to celebrate, and some of the other memorable confrontations with supporters during his career. Kev also speaks incredibly openly about his mental health, why the loud and confrontational character people saw on the pitch was sometimes a mask, the loneliness that can exist inside professional football and how he has prepared himself for the day he eventually has to stop playing. We also put the scale of his career into perspective by comparing his number of appearances with some of football's biggest names, including Steven Gerrard, Zlatan Ibrahimović, Paolo Maldini, Frank Lampard, Ryan Giggs, Gianluigi Buffon and Cristiano Ronaldo. Plus Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Nick Barmby, Joleon Lescott, Ian Rush, Gazza, Maradona, Alex Ferguson, the best players and managers Kev encountered and plenty more. A brilliant, funny and extremely honest look at a football career that is still going. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? • David Price: Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, Liverpool & Life as a Heavyweight | TFH Podcast #63
    Sep 30 2026
Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. Episode 63 is something completely different as former heavyweight boxer David Price becomes the first boxer to join the podcast. David grew up football-mad in Liverpool, went all the way to the final trials for Liverpool Schools and admits that, had his football career gone differently, he might never have stepped into a boxing gym. From there came an incredible career in boxing — and in this episode we bring both of his sporting worlds together. David talks about beating Tyson Fury as an amateur, sharing the ring with Anthony Joshua, the highs and lows of professional boxing, the impact of losing to Tony Thompson, dealing with fear and pressure, and why boxing is such an unforgiving sport. But this is The Football Historian Podcast, so there's plenty of Liverpool too. We discuss his favourite Liverpool players, Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, John Barnes, Mohamed Salah, Luis Suárez and Steve McManaman, why Mario Balotelli frustrated him, and why Alan Hansen, James Milner and Joel Matip deserve more recognition. David also recalls one of the greatest Anfield atmospheres he has ever experienced, explains why coming out to You'll Never Walk Alone became such an important part of his boxing career and reveals the fight he always dreamed about: David Price v Tyson Fury at Anfield. We also get into whether modern footballers are actually better than the players of the past, Premier League v European Cup, Liverpool and Everton fans coming together for boxing and plenty more. A football conversation with a completely different perspective. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? Support the show on Patreon from just £1 per month. • Natasha Dowie: Liverpool, Everton, England & Breaking Barriers | TFH Podcast #62
    Sep 16 2026
Welcome back to The Football Historian Podcast, hosted by Peter Kenny Jones. Episode 62 is a special one, as Natasha Dowie becomes the first former female player to join the podcast. Tash joins me to talk through her incredible career, from growing up as a girl in a boys’ game to becoming a league winner with Liverpool, an FA Cup winner with Everton, an England international and now an ambassador for Liverpool Football Club. We discuss what women’s football was really like before the money, the sacrifices players had to make, training at Widnes, celebrating league titles in Nando’s, moving from Everton to Liverpool, scoring the winning goal against Arsenal in the FA Cup final, and being part of Liverpool Women’s back-to-back title wins. Tash also opens up on her England disappointment, playing abroad in Australia, America, Sweden, Norway and Italy, life at AC Milan, the growth of the women’s game, why young players should experience football abroad, and why the women’s game must keep its identity as it continues to grow. There are also brilliant stories about Matt Beard, Becky Easton, the LFC Foundation, charity games, commentary, the Liverpool Legends game at Anfield, Jürgen Klopp, Steven Gerrard, Thiago, Kenny Dalglish, Ian Rush and more. This is a different kind of Football Historian episode — but a really important one. PATREON Want more from The Football Historian Podcast? Watch the exclusive Extra Time section of this interview on Patreon from just £1 a month. In this week’s Patreon section, Tash brings in her Liverpool Legends shirt from the recent game against Dortmund and talks about what it meant to play at Anfield in front of 64,000 fans with Jürgen Klopp as her manager, alongside some of the biggest names in Liverpool history.
