Every hunter alive knows a cold front is good. Damn near none of us could tell you why.
That gap costs guys more good sits than just about anything else in the fall. This week I break down what's happening to that deer physically, because once you get the why, you can figure out the edge cases yourself. He's already wearing his winter coat. All through a warm stretch he's basically walking around in a parka in seventy-five-degree weather, so he lays up and moves at night. A hard drop is the first real relief he's had in weeks.
The big one: it's the delta, not the number. Fifty-two degrees in late September after a week of upper seventies is electric. That same fifty-two in November after two weeks of forties is an average day. Same number, two totally different hunts.
Also in this one: what barometric pressure does and what nobody actually knows, whether to hunt the front or the day after, and the part nobody warns you about. A front brings a wind shift, and your best stand might be unhuntable on the new wind.
Then the one for the public land guys. The forecast is on everybody's phone, so the obvious day is the crowded day. Sometimes the sleeper is the day behind it.
A front doesn't override everything else. It's the multiplier, not the plan.
