A man who trusted his hands returned after a fourteen-mile trek to find a fire burning in a ring he had recorded as cold eleven hours earlier; two of the logs were his and a third was a forked, 18-inch branch cut with fine teeth. How could a fire that should not exist have been burning, and why did Edward feel, briefly, that it belonged there?
In this episode, we follow the sequence of facts recorded by Edward O'Connor and the reconstruction by documentary journalist Jean Campbell to describe what happened at the Teller Creek clearing and why one physical detail still resists explanation.
Person: Edward O'Connor
Date: June 14, 2011
Location: Teller Creek clearing, six miles in from Route 44 trailhead
Investigator: Jean Campbell (documentary journalist)
Occupation: Earth science teacher, Hadler High School
- Edward left camp at 5:52 AM after writing in his notebook: "fire out, stones cold, good to go."
- He walked a fourteen-mile loop and returned at 4:58 PM to find orange coals and a fire with felt heat from four feet away.
- The fire ring contained three pieces of wood: two were his seasoned split hardwood he had set aside; the third was an 18-inch Y-shaped forked branch.
- The forked branch had both ends cut with clean, fine marks consistent with a tool of "small, close teeth," not a hatchet or his folding knife.
- There were no footprints, no disturbed tent, and no missing supplies at the clearing when Edward arrived.
