September 30, 2026: It took quite a few years but finally Fred Hoiberg pulled it off. He got Nebraska to the NCAA Tournament and won a game (two actually) before falling to Iowa in the Sweet 16. At the time of his hiring, it felt like Hoiberg was a home run hire but the ‘Huskers struggled for years to be truly competitive in the Big Ten.

Last year was the breakout year where they were one of the last undefeated in college basketball going all the way until January before their first loss. Nebraska had some key personnel losses with graduations so following up last season’s success might not be so easy. However, Pryce Sandfort’s return should help their chances.

October 1, 2026: Tom Izzo continues to crush it on the recruiting trail year after year as he lands another 4* for next year - Jadyn Jenkins. Jenkins is a 6’10” center who brings a versatile game of defense, offense, and athleticism. He joins fellow 4* point guard Antonio Pemberton for next year’s team.

MSU added a game late this year to its exhibition schedule - Incarnate Word - to follow the Izzone student campout. The game will occur during what is normally Midnight Madness celebration so it will give a better look for Spartans fans what the team is this year. We don’t expect Incarnate Word to be stiff competition but allow for some experimentation from Izzo and staff.

October 2, 2026: Michigan State began their season (sort of) with an early exhibition game following the student camp out against the University of Incarnate Word from Texas. The Southland conference team was the pick by MSU and they easily handled the Cardinals, 89-59 behind Jesse McCulloch’s 20 points and 5 rebounds.

A lot to like in the game and the progression with McCulloch and Jordan Scott who has added strength and some more poise. The rest of the crew looked good too and we will have to wait until October 20 and the matchup against UConn to get a better feel for what this team might be.

October 15, 2026: Brad Underwood and his Fighting Illini finally got their breakthrough season with a trip to the Final Four. Illinois hadn’t been in the Final Four since 2004 so it was a well earned appearance after they assembled a balanced team on both sides of the ball that could really rebound.

This year might be as good or even better depending on whether or not they can get the development they need from some key guys and the new pieces are as good as advertised. If this team can shoot better than middle of the pack from 3 and do the rest like last year they could be a serious Big Ten and national title contender.

October 8, 2026: Last season didn’t go as planned for Mick Cronin and the Bruins. Injuries to star players hampered their chances to win a Big Ten or go far in the NCAA Tournament. Added to that was a huge disappointment with star transfer Donovan Dent who just never lived up to the offensive numbers of his all Mountain West season.

For this year, UCLA went out and got some more firepower spending (allegedly) 7 figures on a two year deal with 17 year old Nikola Kusturica from Serbia. Will it be enough to get UCLA over the hump? If Cronin fails to deliver this year will his seat get hot?

October 11, 2026: It’s hard to find much to criticize about Michigan’s season last year. Dusty May assembled an unconventional roster and took the Wolverines to the promised land with a national title. One of the most statistically dominant teams in recent memory, Michigan cruised through the Big Ten with a 19-1 record and fairly easily won the the Big Ten’s first National Title since MSU in 2000 by beating UConn.

The offseason certainly got interesting for the Wolverines as they had the expected roster turnover but also lost Dusty May to the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA. The move came fairly late so assistant coach, Mike Boynton, was elevated to the head coach on a 2 year deal. Boynton was previously the head coach of the Oklahoma State Cowboys where he had a pretty unremarkable stay. He managed to keep most of Michigan’s newest loaded roster and will try and find a way to get the Wolverines back the the Tournament and another deep run.
