They follow the ritual perfectly. The elevator ascends when it should go down. The doors open... and they're right back in their own lobby. They laugh, relieved. It was just a bust.

But then they notice the small things. The security guard has a face that's almost right, but not quite. They step outside, and the sun is setting in the wrong part of a sickly, green sky. The game didn't fail. It worked. It didn't take them to another world; it just shifted them one step to the side, into a perfect, terrifying replica of their lives. Now they're trapped in an uncanny valley version of home, where everything is familiar and everything is wrong.
