Episode 3: The Power of Wait Time

What if one of the most powerful instructional strategies required no new curriculum, no technology, and no additional planning?

In this episode of The Education Shift, Dr. T.J. Klein explores the research behind wait time; the intentional pause teachers give students after asking a question. Decades of research show that when educators increase wait time from just one second to three to five seconds, student participation rises, responses become more thoughtful, and higher-order thinking improves.

Focusing specifically on PreK through 2nd grade classrooms, Dr. Klein explains why young learners need additional processing time to organize their thoughts, develop language, and build the confidence to share their ideas. You'll hear practical examples, simple classroom strategies, and actionable tips you can implement immediately to increase student engagement and deepen learning.

If you've ever felt uncomfortable with silence after asking a question, this episode may change the way you think about those quiet moments forever.

    In This Episode, You'll Learn:

    • Why most teachers wait less than two seconds for a response
    • What the research says about increasing think time
    • How wait time supports oral language development in young learners
    • Why wait time creates more equitable classroom discussions
    • Three simple strategies you can use tomorrow to increase student participation

Sometimes the most meaningful shift in teaching is not saying more. It's giving students the time they need to think.

Listen now and discover why every student's voice is worth waiting for.

Episode 2 - Retrieval Practice That Actually Works (PreK - 2nd)

Episode 2: Retrieval Practice That Actually Works in Elementary ClassroomsWhy do students seem to know something one day and forget it the next?In this episode of The Education Shift, Dr. T.J. Klein explores one of the most powerful findings from cognitive science: students learn more by remembering than by simply reviewing. Known as retrieval practice, this research-backed strategy helps strengthen memory, improve long-term retention, and make learning stick.Designed specifically for PreK–2 educators, this episode breaks down what retrieval practice is, why it works for young learners, and how teachers can implement it through simple, low-stakes classroom routines. You'll discover practical strategies such as quick recall questions, turn-and-talk prompts, drawing from memory, and end-of-day reflections that require little preparation but can have a significant impact on student learning. If you're tired of reteaching the same concepts and want a simple way to help students retain what they've learned, this episode offers practical ideas you can use in your classroom tomorrow. Why reviewing isn't the same as remembering? The science behind retrieval practiceHow memory develops in young learnersSimple retrieval strategies for PreK–2 classroomsCreating low-stakes opportunities for recallBuilding stronger long-term retention through daily routinesEpisode Takeaway: Students don't learn most effectively by seeing information again. They learn most effectively by remembering it.Research & ResourcesEpisode 2: Retrieval Practice That Actually Works in Elementary ClassroomsThe ideas discussed in this episode are grounded in cognitive science research on retrieval practice, memory, and early childhood learning. Retrieval practice refers to the act of recalling information from memory rather than simply reviewing or rereading content. Research consistently shows that active recall strengthens long-term learning and retention across age groups, including young children.Key Research FindingsRetrieval practice is more effective than passive review. Research has found that students retain information longer when they actively retrieve it from memory rather than repeatedly rereading notes, texts, or learning materials. Retrieval strengthens memory traces and improves future recall.Low-stakes recall improves long-term retention. Simple activities such as brief quizzes, oral questioning, drawing from memory, and classroom discussion help students strengthen learning without the pressure of grades or formal testing.Young children benefit from retrieval practice. Research demonstrates that retrieval practice can improve learning in preschool, kindergarten, first grade, and elementary-age students when activities are developmentally appropriate. Benefits have been observed in areas such as vocabulary development, spelling, factual knowledge, and concept learning.Retrieval practice should be adapted for early learners. Studies involving first-grade students found that retrieval activities were most successful when designed around the developmental needs of young children, using visuals, simple prompts, and brief recall opportunities.Frequent, brief retrieval opportunities are powerful. Embedding short recall activities into daily routines helps students strengthen memory over time and identify gaps in understanding before misconceptions become entrenched.Practical Classroom Applications (PreK–2)Examples highlighted in this episode include:Quick recall questions at the beginning of lessonsTurn-and-talk memory promptsDrawing or illustrating previously learned concepts from memoryEnd-of-day reflection questionsOral recall of vocabulary, phonics skills, or math strategiesRetrieval activities embedded into classroom routines rather than formal testsThese approaches align with recommendations from cognitive science researchers studying retrieval-based learning in early childhood settings.Recommended ReadingThe Learning ScientistsRetrieval Practice OverviewResearch summaries and teacher-friendly implementation guidesThe Learning ScientistsSumeracki, M.Retrieval Practice with First Graders (6–7 Years). The 3-Minute Rule: Getting Students Ready to Learn

In this episode of The Education Shift with Dr. T.J. Klein, we focus on one small window of time that can shape the success of an entire lesson: the first three minutes. Designed for Pre-K through 2nd grade educators, this quick episode explores how predictable routines, visual cues, and simple first tasks can help young learners settle their bodies, focus their attention, and transition into learning with confidence.

Dr. Klein introduces the 3-Minute Rule—a practical approach for helping students become physically settled, cognitively engaged, and emotionally oriented to the task before instruction begins. With examples for Pre-K, kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade, this episode offers an easy-to-implement routine educators can use right away to reduce confusion, support self-regulation, and create a calmer start to learning.

Key takeaway: Learning doesn’t start when instruction begins. It starts when attention stabilizes.
