What if your blood sugar looked completely normal but you were actually dying!? In this episode of The Diabetes Diaries, Rachael Sood sits down with Danica Collins, a person living with Type 1 Diabetes, to discuss the dangers of DKA. Danica is a well known influencer and founder of Dia-log, a health coaching and community platform dedicated to empowering people living with diabetes . She is joined on set along side her mother, Regina Collins, also a well known global mission worker. Danica shares the terrifying story of how she almost lost her life to diabetic ketoacidosis while flying alone from San Diego to New York City — and how her blood sugar never looked dangerously high. She breaks down what DKA actually is, why it can happen even when your glucose levels look fine, how she Ubered herself to the emergency room alone in a city she didn't know, what she wish she had known before it happened and the resources every person living with diabetes needs to have in place before an emergency strikes.

The Omnipod 5 insulin pump, made by the company “insulet”, is currently the only tubeless insulin pump with automated insulin delivery capability and CGM connectivity on the market in the United States of America. The company released updates to its algorithm in June 2926, including a lower glucose target and improvements so that people can stay in automation for longer. It also connects now to the libre 3 plus sensor, giving patients more choice when it comes to choosing which brand CGM they want to use. What’s most exciting is the new platform called Discover. Listen in and learn more about how the Omnipod 5 is helping people with Diabetes stay in their target glucose range easier and for longer.

  • The Diabetes device that could end DKA? - Dr. David Ahn

We know DKA kills. And is often the first thing that occurs when people are newly diagnosed with diabetes. But now there’s a continuous dual glucose ketone monitor, manufactured by Abbott, that could change it all. In this episode of The Diabetes Diaries, Rachael Sood sits down with Dr. David Ahn, Endocrinologist of Orange County, California. Dr. Ahn explains that CKM technology is not far from US approval, and could be an early indicator of DKA, even earlier than hyperglycemia and the alarms we get from CGM. We discuss the pros and cons of CKM, and if this will solve problems or create new ones? We discuss certain populations, specifically children and wonder if parents can use this technology, especially in conjunction with follow apps. Using CKM may increase awareness for not just people with diabetes, but also for doctors. It is known that certain medication’s can increase risk for DKA so could the evolution of CKM differentiate a new generation of clinicians more ready to prescribe drug classes like Glp1 and SGLT2 inhibitors, that maybe they were scared to do prior? Learn about the brands by Abbot and Dexcom entering the market, which could connect to other systems such as pumps.
