The Deactivated Key Card Exposed a Killer's Pattern
In this episode, we follow the timeline of two missing women and the security traces that link them. The episode lays out where and when key events happened and asks how routine access and small discrepancies revealed a repeating pattern.
Person: Jennifer Burns
Person: Sandra Melo
Person: Person: Edward Jenkins
Location: Route Nine, New Mexico
Date: December 5 (phone signal and door swipe) and February 7-12 (ATM withdrawals)
- Cheryl Gardner found a burgundy hard-shell suitcase upright on a frozen shoulder of Route Nine with a legible tag for Jennifer Burns and no footprints around it.
- Jennifer Burns’ last phone signal placed her on the access road east of the Seco Rail Freight yard at 12:40 a.m., and she had told a friend her packed suitcase was in her 2019 Civic trunk.
- A Seco Rail depot door recorded a key-card swipe at 1:03 a.m.; the card belonged to Edward Jenkins, whose contract had ended eighteen months earlier and whose card was never deactivated.
- Depot corridor footage that might have shown what happened was overwritten by a 72-hour erase cycle before investigators requested it, erasing the visual record of the 1:03 a.m. door event.
- Three ATM withdrawals in February at a Cobre Flats branch tied Edward Jenkins to the week Sandra Melo disappeared, and Sandra’s work badge was later found on the shoulder of a county road.
