As defined by author Eckhart Tolle, the dark night of the soul is "a term used to describe what one could call a collapse of a perceived meaning in life; an eruption into your life of a deep sense of meaninglessness." The symptoms include deep sense of having no purpose, confusion, hope for life or the future, anger, sadness, emotional pain, apathy, and negative thought patterns. If you have a belief in a higher power/God, it feels as though that divine presence fades away from you.
This is a necessary process in a soul's evolution as it clears away the old, self-centered ego to make room for a new version of the soul. Essentially, it is a rebirth into one's true self.
