Linda Clark dives into curiosity and adventure with Andy Beck today as she unlocks his love of sky diving with the Sky Diving Center for almost 23 years. Andy defines adventure as a little different for everybody, but as a trip in life. From learning that you can’t skydive in the snow, to becoming a leading expert, Andy describes the rush of skydiving as living life on the edge, and having the whole world slow down...even just for a second.

Andy discusses the struggle as a leader to simply make a decision, and weighing the decisions of accepting the mistakes you make, and knowing when to switch gears in business.

Decision by default and weighing your options for too long may be treacherously dangerous if you ‘sleep on it’ for too long, and Andy walks us through some examples on how to avoid decision by default and make timely decisions in your business.

Between the parachuting world and the business world, Andy shares that in the business world you don’t need to have a class on trust, as you do in parachuting. How do the two connect? A lot of times in the business world, it is acceptable to have people work for your organization that you don’t trust. Andy suggests when interviewing a new team member, imagine they will be the one packing your parachute, and how much you trust them to be on your team.

Talking about finding common ground and stumbling through childhood, Andy found that skydiving was the group he was looking for in his life and what he should be doing with his life moving forward. Andy and Linda compare some stories about your value in your career and what you want out of life, and how to best find your way there - even if there are some bumps in the road.

Linda and Andy discuss activities that give them a sense of a rush; from skydiving, kayaking, and horseback riding, and how these can connect you and your habits in business. If you are looking for a sign to try something new - this is the episode to listen to!

    Quotes:

    • “For the first time I could ever remember, I was only focused on one thing”
    • “Everybody is scared, the difference between somebody that can lead other people, is that you may be scared but you are going to do it anyway.”
    • “You’re not going to be able to be effective, if you can’t make decisions.”
    • “It’s way more energy to get rid of people that don't perform, than it is to spend a little more energy up front to ensure that you don’t hire the wrong people.”
