A proposito di questo titolo
In October 1971, two physicists bought plane tickets for four atomic clocks — under the name Mr. Clock — and flew them around the world. When the clocks came home, they disagreed with the clocks that had stayed behind, by exactly the billionths of a second Einstein predicted. Elena follows the measurement through muons, the Hafele-Keating experiment, and the GPS satellites in your phone, to the one form of time travel that is not a story but a measurement. What was measured? Eastward clocks lost 59 nanoseconds, westward clocks gained 273 nanoseconds (Hafele-Keating, Science 1972); GPS satellite clocks gain a net 38 microseconds a day. What does it mean? Time is relative to motion and gravity. Verdict: scientifically demonstrated — limited forward time travel only. Sources: Hafele and Keating, Science 177 (1972) 168; Einstein (1905); Frisch-Smith muon experiment; CERN muon storage ring (1977); Pound-Rebka (1959); GPS relativistic corrections.
