Six hundred cavalrymen ride into a valley surrounded by enemy guns.
They know something has gone terribly wrong.
And still…..they ride.
In Part 5 of our Alfred Lord Tennyson Poet Study, we step onto the battlefield of the Crimean War and discover the true event that inspired
The Charge of the Light Brigade. We’ll explore the disastrous military order that sent the British Light Brigade charging toward Russian artillery, and then listen to how Tennyson transforms history into poetry. Pay attention to the pounding rhythm of the language: the poem itself seems to gallop.
Along the way, we’ll wrestle with some difficult questions about courage, duty, obedience, leadership, sacrifice, and honor. Tennyson does not ask us to pretend the command was wise. Instead, he asks us to remember the extraordinary courage of the men who carried it out.
“Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die.”And when the charge is over, Tennyson leaves his readers with a command of his own:
“Honor the Light Brigade.”
