A single white-oak chair, hand-turned and with a rush seat, was found alone in the center of Fenwick Town Hall’s parking lot while the building still burned; it has been present at four separate town-hall fires over 150 years without a single scorch mark. What did generations of a closed coastal town choose to protect with that chair, and why was it always found unburned?
In this episode, we follow the timeline of the chair from its commission to the town through archival receipts, inspector reports, and a folklorist’s field notes, and we trace the pattern of maintenance payments and unusual documentation that cluster around each historic fire. What emerges is a question about communal secrecy and the objects a town uses to keep it.
