The Badge Returned: Who Kept Kevin Whitaker's Key to Everything?
In this episode, we follow the thread of a single missing object - Kevin Whitaker’s work badge - that reappears years after his death. We trace the people, places, and small decisions that kept the badge from the crime scene and ask what motive or meaning could explain sending it home when it did.
Person: Kevin Whitaker
Age: 38
Job: Facilities coordinator, Aldermoor Properties
Location: Marsden Drive apartment; maintenance path between Building C and Aldermoor Creek
Event: Badge mailed to sister 27 months after July 11 homicide
- Kevin’s badge opened seventeen Aldermoor buildings and was worn daily on a retractable lanyard, yet it was absent from the July 11 crime scene and missing from the initial evidence log.
- Pell, Kevin’s diabetic retired racing greyhound, established Kevin’s strict schedule; neighbors noted Kevin arrived home by six every evening for the dog’s insulin shot.
- Surveillance shows a Coldstream Climate Solutions van at Aldermoor at 4:47 p.m. on July 11 without any service ticket, dispatch record, or work order to justify the visit.
- Troy Harmon, a 31-year-old Coldstream technician known to Kevin, appears on camera that afternoon but had no scheduled call and registered a toll at the Dellford exit at 5:58 p.m.
- Twenty-seven months passed with the badge unaccounted for until a plain envelope arrived in Kevin’s sister’s mailbox with the laminated badge and no note, return address, or explanation.
