The Backmarker That Cost Panis a Sure Monaco Win

In Spain in 1997, Olivier Panis found himself trapped behind a line of slower cars for seven laps, watching six seconds bleed away from his gap to race leader Jacques Villeneuve. A year earlier, in the rain at Monaco, he had climbed from fourteenth on the grid to the only Formula One victory of his career. What happened in those seven laps, and what did it end up costing him?

In this episode, we trace Olivier Panis's eleven seasons in Formula One, from a single rain-soaked win at Monaco through a horrific leg-breaking crash and a testing program where he matched a double world champion's lap times, asking why raw speed and composure under pressure never translated into a second Grand Prix win.

Person: Olivier Panis
Location: Circuit de Monaco, Monaco
Date: May 19, 1996
Case: his sole Formula One victory, taken from a Monaco Grand Prix in which only three cars finished
Status: retired from full-time F1 racing in 2004; later founded a team that won back-to-back Le Mans podiums

- Panis started fourteenth on the grid and won the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix for Ligier, a team that had not won a race in fifteen years, after the two-hour time limit stopped the race with only three cars still running
- At the 1997 Canadian Grand Prix he broke both legs in a high-speed crash, missed the next seven races, and returned to finish ninth in the championship with sixteen points that season
- In Spain in 1997 he was held up behind backmarkers for seven laps, lost six seconds to leader Jacques Villeneuve, and finished second instead of winning
- While testing for McLaren, Panis regularly matched the lap times of double world champion Mika Häkkinen, who was reportedly upset when Panis left the program
- In 2016 he co-founded Panis Barthez Compétition with Fabien Barthez; the team, later renamed Panis Racing, took back-to-back LMP2-class podiums at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2020 and 2021
