A proposito di questo titolo
In 1900, Greek sponge divers pulled a corroded lump of bronze from a Roman shipwreck off Antikythera. A year later, archaeologist Valerios Stais saw gears inside it. The lump was a hand-cranked computer from the second century BCE — thirty-seven bronze gears that could predict eclipses decades in advance, track the Olympic Games, and model the Moon's irregular orbit. James follows the investigation from Derek de Solla Price's X-rays to the 2006 Nature reconstruction, and asks the real question: not whether the machine is real, but why nothing like it appeared again for fourteen hundred years. Verdict: documented and explained.
