Is Texas Tech the best team in the Big 12 right now?

On this edition of the Red Raiders Daily Blitz, we break down the case for the Texas Tech Red Raiders as the top team in the Big 12 after a 5-0 start and a 29-7 road win over Colorado.

The biggest reason for the optimism?

The defense.

Texas Tech forced four interceptions against Colorado, including a pick-six by John Curry, and shut the Buffaloes out after their opening drive.

That gives the Red Raiders something different from the stereotypical Texas Tech team.

This team can win with defense.

Topics include:

🏈 Why Texas Tech deserves to be in the Big 12 title conversation

🏈 The Red Raiders’ 5-0 start

🏈 How dominant the defense has become

🏈 Why turnovers are changing games

🏈 What Will Hammond and the offense still need to improve

🏈 Whether Texas Tech can make a College Football Playoff run

🏈 How the Red Raiders compare with BYU, Houston, Oklahoma State and Utah

🏈 Why winning ugly might actually be a good sign

Texas Tech doesn’t have to be perfect.

It just has to keep winning.

Texas Tech survives Houston 28-26 in a tense Big 12 opener, moving to 3-0 after a game that exposed some issues but also showed the Red Raiders can win when they’re not at their best.

On this Houston Cougars Post-Game Edition of The Red Raiders Daily Blitz, Tim Hamm breaks down how Will Hammond, Kenny Johnson, J’Koby Williams and the Texas Tech defense made just enough plays to hold off No. 22 Houston.

But this wasn’t clean.

Houston quarterback Conner Weigman threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns, and the Cougars finished with 458 total yards while Texas Tech turned the ball over twice.

The Red Raiders still found a way.

Will Hammond is back for Texas Tech football, and the Red Raiders opened the 2026 season with a 33-10 win over Abilene Christian in Lubbock.

On this episode of the Texas Tech Red Raiders Daily Blitz, Timm “IndyCarTim” Hamm breaks down Hammond’s return from a torn ACL, his 298 passing yards and late 64-yard touchdown to Malcolm Simmons, and what the opener revealed about Joey McGuire’s defending Big 12 champions.

We also get into Quinten Joyner’s first-touch touchdown, J’Koby Williams’ early score, Stone Harrington’s four field goals, Tommy Castellanos’ Texas Tech debut, and a Red Raiders defense that held Abilene Christian to just 119 passing yards.

The biggest question after Week 1: was this simply an early-season tune-up, or did Texas Tech show some offensive issues that could matter when the schedule gets tougher?

With Oregon State up next, we break down what needs to improve and why Hammond’s return is still the biggest reason for optimism.

Jones Stadium is no more—at least officially.

Texas Tech has reportedly landed a massive 15-year, $75 million naming-rights agreement with Galaxy, transforming the historic home of Red Raiders football into Galaxy Stadium beginning with the 2026 season.

In this episode of the Texas Tech Red Raiders Daily Blitz, IndyCarTim examines whether the agreement is a financial masterstroke or a painful surrender of Texas Tech tradition. The partnership is expected to generate approximately $5 million annually while creating new NIL and commercial opportunities for Red Raiders athletes.

Can Texas Tech use the Galaxy Stadium money to build on its first College Football Playoff appearance, retain elite players and become a permanent Big 12 championship contender? Or will fans reject the new identity and continue calling the stadium “The Jones”?

The official name may be changing, but the debate over money, tradition and Texas Tech’s national ambitions is only beginning.
