No judgment. If you owe the IRS $30,000, how much will you have to pay each month? There is no single answer. I’m Logan Allec, CPA and owner of Choice Tax Relief. I explain how your total balance, time left for IRS collection, type of payment plan, and financial situation can affect the monthly amount. We’ll cover checking your balance and missing returns, simple payment plans, Form 433-F, allowable living expenses, asset equity, partial payment installment agreements, and currently not collectible status. The dollar amounts are simplified examples—not quotes, guaranteed payments, or promised debt forgiveness. What if your rent, food, or other necessary expenses exceed the IRS collection financial standards? I explain when documented need may support a higher allowance, using a medically necessary diet and housing costs as examples. Simply spending more does not guarantee that the IRS will allow the extra expense.

    CLARIFICATIONS & IRS RESOURCES
Expense rules differ by category. National food/clothing and out-of-pocket health care standards generally provide allowances without requiring proof of actual spending. Local housing and transportation generally use actual expenses or the standard, whichever is less, subject to justified exceptions. Different rules may apply to qualifying payment plans, including the six-year repayment rule. Amounts change; check the current standards for your household and location.

Can refunds from unfiled tax returns cover old IRS debt before a levy? In this video, I respond to a viewer who owes about $20,000 for 2018 and 2019 and expects refunds from their 2023–2025 returns.

I explain why the exact IRS notice matters, how to ask for a collection hold, why filing promptly is important, and what to consider if you received an LT11 or CP90. We also cover checking the current balance with penalties and interest and reviewing each tax year separately.

    TIMING NOTE
The filing-year discussion refers to 2026. At 3:37, the reference to the calendar-year 2025 e-file shutdown should be 2026. Check current IRS filing availability and the deadline printed on your notice. An equivalent hearing does not provide the same automatic levy protection as a timely CDP hearing.
