Welcome back to Deep & Shallow, the Talking Smack 415 series where best friends Debbie Mink and Jamie the Great talk about whatever is happening in our lives, from the genuinely hard stuff to the completely ridiculous.
And this month? There’s a LOT happening.
Debbie just dropped her daughter off at college, and while watching your kid spread her wings is exactly what you spend 18 years preparing for, nobody really prepares you for what happens when you come home and see that empty bedroom.
We talk about the emotional transition of sending a child to college, the grief and pride that can exist at the exact same time, changing family dynamics, and whether the so called empty nest might eventually have some perks. More time for ourselves? More hobbies? Nobody asking us where we’re going? Maybe Jamie is onto something.
Debbie is also heading into October with a birthday and a brand-new chapter: beginning her professional coaching certification and building a coaching practice focused on helping people who feel stuck, lost, creatively disconnected, or simply ready to figure out what’s next.
Then things get deeper.
Jamie shares an update from her latest appointment in Boston, where the experimental treatment she’s been undergoing for oral precancerous lesions didn’t lead to the news she was hoping to hear. Instead, doctors found areas they wanted to investigate further and performed two biopsies.
Jamie talks about the physical pain of oral biopsies, the mental exhaustion of walking into an appointment expecting one thing and walking out with something completely different, and why sometimes sleeping through the aftermath is exactly what you need.
And because this is Deep & Shallow, naturally we go from oral biopsies to flooded streets to… KUGEL.
Yes, the Great Kugel Competition continues.
Jamie may have won the Instagram vote, but Debbie is demanding an in-person taste test before conceding anything. A full Kugel-Off is officially coming.
And finally, we have some BIG Talking Smack 415 news: Debbie and Jamie are competing in the Top Host podcast competition! We talk about our strategy, why we want to bring Talking Smack 415 to a bigger audience, and what this podcast has always been about for us: friendship, laughter, connection, and helping people feel a little less alone.
Also discussed: Jamie’s custom “Badass” sweatshirt, October birthdays, empty nesting, coaching, nor’easters, flooded streets, Rosh Hashanah, competitive kugel baking, and why somehow all of these topics make perfect sense in one conversation.
Because that’s friendship. One minute you’re talking about cancer. The next you’re arguing about kugel.
Laughter and friendship to feed your soul.
