Season 1 of Studio Visit takes you behind-the-scenes and breeze block walls of artist studios in London, widely considered Europe's artist capital. In the Pilot, Levin Haegele and Omar Kholeif visit artist, Celia Hempton. In this intimate convening, the listener falls head first into Hempton's universe: in the silence, standing still; from the studio, we free-wheel down the motorway and bear witness to the sites that fire her imagination; engage her poetry; as music simmers beneath the script, we dream with her, encased Celia's distinct aesthetic language.

Celia Hempton was born in 1981 into an artistic family in Stroud, UK. She studied painting at the Glasgow School of Art and the Royal College of Art. She is perhaps best known for her intimately scaled performative paintings that interrogate the politics of looking and being looked at. Over the last 15+ years, her work in music, performance, painting and installation has been exhibited widely at museums and galleries including the ICA Boston; the MCA Chicago; the Whitechapel Gallery, the Serpentine Galleries, and the ICA, all in London, and has featured in significant travelling shows such as the British Art Show and the Gwangju Biennale.

Raffaela Naldi Rossano is an internationally recognized artist primarily based in Naples and around the Mediterranean. Her creative practice is rooted in her studies in psychology—both Jungian and Gestalt Theory. Exploring the limits of desire, memory and ancestral forms of transmission, Naldi creates multimedia installations, which integrate sculpture, moving image, sound, collective action, poetry and the oratorial. In Episode 2 of Studio Visit, artist-curators, Levin Haegele and Omar Kholeif visit Naldi Rossano during her residency at Gasworks—her first extensive period spent in London since completing her MA at Goldsmiths in 2016.

An intimate embrace begins our episode. Together, we weave through and across a journey that takes listeners via portals of memory, music, and time. First, as Levin and Omar begin to play with the artist’s “transitional objects”— they activate questions of musical history, queer movement, concealed knowledge and the situated site of the body. With Naldi Rossano, they conjure ancestors—from the ocean and the poets—from London’s waterways through to Etel Adnan. This is #StudioVisit.

Charan Singh is an award-winning artist and researcher who uses lens based media to explore the performative aesthetics of portraiture and self-portraiture. In particular, they are concerned with "the promise of beauty" looked at from outside of the Euro-American lens of visual culture. Informed by nearly two decades working in not-for-profit (NGO-type) organizations in India, their art seeks to represent and story the lives of individuals whose narratives often remain unseen.

In this episode of #StudioVisit, Omar Kholeif and Levin Haegele, with Sunil Gupta who always has the kettle on the boil, find themselves venturing down lanes of memory with Singh, as they explore the role of the archive in contemporary art, and unfold the artist's experience as he navigates his 'Pre-English life' with their current one.

Charan Singh's first major UK institutional solo exhibition will take place at Autograph ABP this autumn curated by Bindi Vora.

In this summer special, artist and creative producer, Levin Haegele takes us out of the studio to the Cornwall countryside on an aural exploration with the artist, Hannah Brown. Returning to sites that are cocooned both by memory and nature, this episode explores the relationship between the site of the studio and the exploratory spaces that artists often return to. A key focus for Brown, a painter whose art explores the psychology of the English landscape are the edgelands, the in-between spaces that the body experiences through ongoing encounter with place.

Hannah Brown completed her BA in sculpture at Central St. Martins and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. Brown grew up in the West Country and moved to London, where she has lived and worked since the age of 19. Brown has been shortlisted for numerous prizes including the East End Painting Prize, the John Ruskin Prize, and John Moores Painting Prize. Her work is held in collections in the UK, USA, Switzerland, Korea, and the U.A.E, as well as in public collections including the State Art Collection of Ireland, Dublin, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

In this explosive Season 1 finale of Studio Visit, the tables turn as co-host Dr. Omar Kholeif steps into the hot seat, becoming the ultimate subject of enquiry. Moving through spaces of intense vulnerability, displacement, and institutional critique, Kholeif lays bare the raw mechanics of an artistic life—from the painful labor of world-making and the constant shift and drift of identity. The haunting nostalgia of Mariah Carey ballads and dreaming through the artist's own voice surround us. Recorded live across their London studios, the street, and public transit, this raw, unfiltered dialogue unpicks the boundary between artist, curator and creator, asking what it truly means to survive the world of art when a presence alone might just become a revolutionary act unto itself.

The Season Finale was published to coincide with Fellow Travellers, Dubai and Afterglow: Residue from a Departed Sun, Frieze, No. 9 Cork Street, London.
