In this episode of the Ecocentric Human Design podcast, host Jamie Palmer — a 3/5 Triple Split Projector and founder of HD Wild — tackles a distinction most human design education skips entirely: the difference between structural (chronic) not-self and situational not-self.
Jamie opens with her own story: after stumbling into human design in 2019 while running a marketing agency, she realized she had spent roughly 17 years operating as a Projector living like a Generator — constantly doing, producing, and delivering, until burnout forced a reckoning. That experience is now the throughline for how she teaches deconditioning inside HD Wild, her practitioner training and certification program running since 2022.
The episode walks through the two categories in depth. Structural not-self is a default, chronic state of dysregulation — not an occasional detour, but a person's actual operating baseline, often showing up as burnout, perfectionism, excuses, or waffling. It follows recognizable type-based patterns (Projectors acting like Generators, Generators acting like Manifestors, and so on) and cannot be resolved quickly; it requires a genuine reckoning, inner-child work, and time, often measured in years rather than weeks.
Situational not-self, by contrast, happens to someone who has already done that deeper work. They know what a regulated decision feels like in their body, but a specific trigger — FOMO, comparison, an old “should” — knocks them temporarily off center. Because they have a felt sense of their baseline, they can typically notice the pattern and return to it with far more ease.
Jamie connects this directly to a broader concern: because the human design industry has no shared standard of practice, practitioners at wildly different levels of depth are all offering “deconditioning support” without distinguishing between these two fundamentally different needs. She's addressing this head-on inside HD Wild by training practitioners in distinct protocols for each category — including a dedicated “Not Self Day” happening in November.
Whether you're a practitioner trying to better serve your clients, or you're personally trying to understand why some patterns feel so much harder to shift than others, this episode offers a clear, practical framework for telling the two apart.
In this episode:
• The difference between structural and situational not-self, explained simply
• Why “not-self” actually has seven distinct presentations, not one
• Jamie's personal story of 17 years operating outside her design
• Why a standard 6–12 week deconditioning container doesn't work for everyone
• A first look at the upcoming Not Self Day inside HD Wild
