Designers should sell the “house,” not the “blueprint.” Clients care less about process details, file formats, and deliverables than about the change they want: a stronger brand, fewer interruptions, more leads, or confidence in a decision. Process still matters, but it should support the outcome, not lead the pitch.
That outcome is different for every client, even when the service is the same. A bakery owner may want evenings free from answering customer questions, while a company’s marketing manager may need results they can present to leadership. Designers can uncover these goals by asking thoughtful discovery questions, listening closely, and digging beyond surface answers such as “I want to look more professional.”
Before a proposal, pitch, or discovery call, complete the sentence: “When this is done, you’ll finally be able to…” Use the client’s own words to describe the result, then explain the process and deliverables that will make it happen. The episode encourages designers to put that outcome first in a proposal, homepage headline, or discovery call.
