What exactly is the creature in Splinter, and how does its terrifying infection work?

In Splinter (2008), a mysterious organism resembling a parasitic fungus infects animals and humans, invades their tissues, and eventually uses their bodies to keep spreading. But the most disturbing part is that even after death, the organism can continue controlling corpses, moving severed limbs, and reusing infected biomass to create increasingly grotesque creatures.

In this video, we take a detailed look at how the Splinter infection works, how it spreads through its distinctive black spikes, what happens inside the bodies of its victims, why it can control separated body parts, how it detects prey through heat, and what its main weaknesses are. We also explore its mysterious origin, including the possibility that it could be an extraterrestrial life form or an ancient organism released from deep underground, as well as its similarities to real parasitic fungi such as Ophiocordyceps.

We also look at the influence of films like The Thing and Alien, and why this strange organism remains one of the most interesting body-horror concepts in the film.

What do you think the Splinter really is? An alien organism, or something that had always been hidden beneath the Earth?
