  • What does "Having Agency" mean?
    May 5 2022

In today's episode, We will talk about the importance of having Agency AND WHAT THAT MEANS. Gammy has 4 grandchildren and wants them to be self sufficient self confident secure grown adults. Plus, Gammy admits she's working on having agency in my own life and keeping it.

Jess recently learned what the term agency was and was immediately intrigued then disheartened at realizing that this was a concept that was not a part of  her life. As a mother of 2 and on a journey to rebuilding  life, Jess is very much looking forward to learning how to continue to live our lives to the fullest.

Definition from The social science jargon-buster: "The ability of individuals to affect change, make autonomous and independent choices and act in self-determining ways...A sense of agency is a sense that one can be more than reactive to one’s environment; having a sense of agency means that one can be generative, creative, proactive, and reflective. "

    A. Bandura, famous Psychologist, proposed that agency consists of several key factors

    • intentionality: the ability to make plans
    • Forethought: the ability to see what’s necessary or may happen in the future.
    • Self-reactivity: the ability to act on the plans that are made
    • Self-reflectiveness: the ability to reflect upon oneself and the adequacy of thoughts and actions

Self Reflectiveness is the key to self-efficacy- the belief in your own ability-

Join Jess & Gammy as we break this all down and talk about our own struggles to achieve agency in our lives and how we are doing .

  • Take Care of Yourself
    Apr 28 2022

Today Jess and Gammy talk about self care.
Gammy realized she  hasn't been taking care of herself the way she should after a trip to the mall with her grandchildren.  Jess realized she needed to set a line item in her budget for self care after a conversation with her daughter who is growing out of her clothes.

The World Health Organization's definition of self-care is “the ability of individuals, families and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a health-care provider.”

Join Jess and Gammy as they discuss the need for self-care and all the pits in life that can remind you to take a moment reflect and reset by taking care of you.

    Call to Action:
From Gammy: Catholic Charities of Jacksonville is preparing to take in Ukrainian refugees. Please donate if you can.
From Jess:  Be aware of these 7 pillars to Self-Care  from the article SELF-CARE IN HEALTH: WE CAN DEFINE IT, BUT SHOULD WE ALSO MEASURE IT? by David Webber, Zhenyu Guo, Stephen Mann

    1. Health literacy – includes: the capacity of individuals to obtain, process and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions.
    2. Self-awareness of physical and mental condition – includes: knowing your body mass index (BMI), cholesterol level, blood pressure; engaging in health screening.
    3. Physical activity – practicing moderate intensity physical activity such as walking, cycling, or participating in sports at a desirable frequency.
    4. Healthy eating – includes: having a nutritious, balanced diet with appropriate levels of calorie intake.
    5. Risk avoidance or mitigation – includes: quitting tobacco, limiting alcohol use, getting vaccinated, practicing safe sex, using sunscreens.
    6. Good hygiene – includes: washing hands regularly, brushing teeth, washing food.
    7. Rational and responsible use of products, services, diagnostics and medicines – includes: being aware of dangers, using responsibly when necessary.

  • Ask me anything
    Apr 21 2022

In today's episode, We will ask each other questions. Gammy has known Jess’ Husband Anthony  since he was born, but long distance, as his father Tony and Gammy were first cousins: Tony raised in California and Gammy in Georgia. Jess & Gammy have known each other about 9 years via Facebook but only met face-to-face July 2021 (9 months ago)when Jess and her Husband, upon invitation after the death of Gammy’s Aunt/ Anthony’s Grandmother, came from California to live with Gammy in Jacksonville, FL. Why? To make a new start and heal from all the losses they have experienced the past 5 years.

The old saying goes: “coming to see aint like coming to stay.” So,  Jess & Gammy decided to ask ‘What you always wanted to know but were afraid to ask’ questions of each other just to take our relationship deeper.
    We ask questions about:

    • Favorites
    • Dislikes
    • Setting boundaries
    • Being truthful
    • Legacy building
    • Travel dreams
    • Pet peeves
    • Parental Drag
    • And more in between.

Join us next week when we talk about Self Care.

A dream temporarily removes the child from doctor visits, hospital stays, tests and needles and brings laughter, joy and childhood to the forefront. Dreams give the children and their families memories to carry them through the rough times and smiles to last a lifetime. Dreams bring hope and the promise of tomorrow. All children between the ages of two and a half and eighteen who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and either live or are treated in Northeast Florida or Southeast Georgia are eligible for a dream."  Please donate generously.
