What Our Roots Reveal: A Conversation with Dr. Jarvis McInnis

Special coverage from the 84th Professional Agricultural Workers Conference (PAWC) in Montgomery, Alabama.

What can our agricultural roots reveal about the future we’re growing?

Join host Jazzie Jones and co-host Tahani Young of Ladies of the Hive™ – She Hoe. I Smoke. We Farm.™ as we welcome our special guest, Dr. Jarvis C. McInnis, associate professor of English and African & African American Studies at Duke University.

In this conversation, we explore his book, Afterlives of the Plantation: Plotting Agrarian Futures in the Global Black South, and the connections between Black agricultural history, Tuskegee’s legacy, education, and community life.

Through his research and insights, we reflect on the knowledge carried across generations and how understanding that history can inform the work of farmers, beekeepers, educators, and communities today. We also consider why gatherings like PAWC remain important places for sharing knowledge, building relationships, and cultivating opportunities.

This conversation connects with the purpose of ROOTED HERstory™: Researching History while Honoring HERstory™.

  • When Their Truth Changed- So Did Mine! | Pardon My Truth with Author Kim Hart
    Oct 7 2026

Some conversations don’t expire. Sometimes, you have to REWIND. 🎙️

On this TacoBoutIt Tuesdays™ REWIND, host Jazzie Jones revisits a powerful conversation with Kim Hart, author of Pardon My Truth.

What happens when someone you love reveals a truth that changes the life you thought you knew?

It’s about what happens after someone else’s truth alters your truth and your life—and how you learn to walk in forgiveness, acceptance of others, and acceptance of yourself.

Kim’s story takes us beyond the revelation and into what happens afterward—when you have to process what has changed, reconcile your emotions, accept a new reality, and determine how you will move forward.

We TacoBout forgiveness without pretending there wasn’t pain. We talk about accepting another person’s truth without abandoning your own. And we explore the difficult but powerful process of rediscovering yourself when the future you imagined suddenly looks different.

Because sometimes someone else’s truth becomes an unexpected turning point in discovering your own.

Their truth changed. Her life changed. And so did she.

This conversation reaches beyond one marriage or one experience. It’s about truth, relationships, identity, forgiveness, acceptance, compassion, healing, and finding yourself again when life changes the story.

But pairing teas specifically to complement cigars?

Now there’s a plot twist in the story.

Sheila takes us into the world of tea and cigar pairings, what it’s like being a woman who enjoys cigar culture, and how her passion grew into an entrepreneurial vision.

But the story goes even deeper.

At Aromas, the intriguing names of the teas are inspired by milestones in her grandfather’s journey. Every name opens the door to another piece of his history — and sometimes the names themselves are enough to make you stop and ask questions.

  • Celebrating 145 Years of Tuskegee University | History, HERstory & Legacy Episode
    Jul 5 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

What an incredible day at Tuskegee University!

Join hosts Jazzie Jones and Tahani Young as Ladies of the Hive™ takes you to the 145th Anniversary Celebration of one of America's most influential institutions. Walking through the historic student-built home of Booker T. Washington and Margaret Murray Washington, then standing on its steps overlooking the historic grounds of Tuskegee University, was a powerful reminder that History isn't just found in books—it's found in the people, places, craftsmanship, and legacies that continue to inspire generations. As I walked through the home, I couldn't help but think of my own grandmother's house and the memories that live on through the places we hold dear.

One of the highlights of the day was interviewing Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee and Dr. Kwesi Daniels, Head of the Department of Architecture, Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science. We didn't mind standing in the Alabama heat because some conversations are simply too important not to capture. Together, we discussed Tuskegee's remarkable legacy, its future, and why preserving these stories matters.

We were also deeply moved by a powerful presentation of Frederick Douglass' "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?"—a moment that reminded us why History must continue to be told honestly, completely, and courageously.

At Ladies of the Hive™, we believe HERstory and History together create a richer, more complete understanding of our past. Our mission isn't to replace anyone's story, but to help ensure that the voices, contributions, leadership, and achievements of women are seen, heard, documented, and celebrated as an integral part of the History they have always helped shape. Through conversations rooted in agriculture, education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and community, we hope to inspire future generations to build upon the legacy of those who came before us.

As I stood on the steps of the historic student-built home of Booker T. Washington and Margaret Murray Washington, I couldn't help but think about the students whose hands laid the bricks, shaped the wood, and built more than a house—they built a legacy. One hundred forty-five years later, the home is still standing. The university is still standing. The work continues. The mission lives on. And perhaps that's one of Tuskegee's greatest lessons: when you build with purpose, your work can outlive you.

So grab your favorite beverage, your favorite taco, kick your feet up, sit back, relax, and join us for another episode of Ladies of the Hive™. And if you're joining us on TacoBoutIt Tuesdays™, you're already in the right place.

Real People. Real Topics. Real Places. Real Good Fun.
