On his tenth birthday, Eadric lays his palm on the testing crystal in front of his father's whole court, and it stays dark. No fire in his blood means no name and no inheritance. The Duke strikes him from the succession, sends him north to a remount station at the end of the world, and hands him the dull grey rock off the mantel on his way out: "Take the rock. It's as useful as you."

At the station, the old stablemaster uses the rock as a weight on the granary scale. Then it starts getting lighter.

The stablemaster is Wulfstan, the man who killed the last dragon in the realm forty winters ago. He takes one look at what climbs out of the shell and calls it a marsh lizard.
