She Walked In-A Boot Waited, No Tracks Led Away

A single boot sat upright on untouched snow, laced and double-knotted, with no tracks leading to or away from it - and a woman who knew these woods like her own street vanished without a trace. The hat she wore was found in a nearby depression, partly covered by fresh snowfall that fell before 2 a.m.; how did she disappear between those two points and leave such impossible evidence behind?

In this episode, we follow the timeline, the search response, and the physical clues left on the landscape to ask what could explain a boot placed as if on a table and a scent trail that ends in a snow-filled bowl. Could the terrain, weather, or something else account for a disappearance that left no trail?

Person: Valerie Murphy
Location: Ridgeback State Forest
Date: Signed log on February 7 at 3:12 p.m.; search began February 9 at 6:15 a.m.
Temperature: 12 degrees Fahrenheit during the search
Distance: 0.9 miles between the bowl and the boot

- Valerie Murphy, age 61, signed the Galena Road Trailhead log at 3:12 p.m, on February 7.
- Two inches of snow fell between 9:00 p.m, on February 7 and 2:00 a.m, on February 8, covering the hat.
- Two independent search dogs gave a terminal scent at the same depression roughly 30 feet across.
- The boot was a size 7 Danner hunting boot, right foot, photographed at 8:47 a.m, by Gordon Lewis.
- The ridge-and-slope route between the bowl and boot is 0.9 miles and took an experienced SAR leader 31 minutes to hike.
