- At 6:40 AM on September 9, Wayne Underwood found a 30-foot galvanized anchor chain coiled on the dock with Marie Brown’s laminated dive certification card threaded through the final three links.
- The Ariel Dawn departed Brunswick on the afternoon of September 1 and was making way in a 15-knot southeast breeze by nightfall on September 2.
- A diesel fuel-return-line fitting had been improperly torqued for years, allowing a fine diesel mist to land on a hot exhaust riser and ignite on the night of September 2.
- The life raft canister’s CO2 cartridge carried an inspection stamp dated four years earlier; the raft inflated to roughly one-third capacity and proved insufficient as a full platform.
- The anchor attachment burned through at approximately 2:00 AM on September 3; the hull went down but the chain remained, which the three people held onto as the boat burned.
