A cool, methodical deception left a $240,000 painting replaced by a counterfeit so plausibly documented that its provenance read better than the museum’s - and it was delivered in an acid-free crate beside a dumpster. How did a conservator with two formal condition reports, two new business filings, and a fifteen-year-old bike courier become the hinge of a scheme that exploited missing technical study and an insurance appraisal?
In this episode, we follow the timeline of events from May 14, 2011 back through years of conservation work, business registrations, and insurance appraisals to trace how the fake supplanted the original - and ask whether a forgery can reveal more about an artwork’s history than its owner ever did.
Person: Kathleen York
Date: May 14, 2011
Location: Renner Street, Caston, Ohio
Event: Theft of Evening, Auglaize County (oil painting, 24" x 30")
Status: Original remained on gallery wall; forged painting delivered in crate
- The stolen painting measured 24 inches by 30 inches and depicted a winter marsh at dusk.
- The gallery’s insurance valuation for Evening, Auglaize County was $240,000 based on a desktop appraisal in 2009.
- Kathleen York filed two formal condition reports (one in 2006 and a later review) recommending full technical analysis.
- York registered two business entities in December 2010: Caston Valley Arts Associates and Hartwick Conservation Supplies.
- On February 2011 a photograph with the signature matching Edmund Carr was submitted to Beacon Specialty Group under the name Margaret Dunn, leading to an updated appraisal at $240,000.
