Sew in the Know

Hi, I'm Mike Guccione.
Welcome to Sew in the Know. This is the podcast where we talk about what's actually happening in the world of sewing, quilting, and embroidery — the new machines, the industry news, the events, the trends, and yes, the occasional hot take.

But we also keep it real. No matter what's new and exciting out there, most of us are still sitting at our machines trying to figure out why something isn't working the way it should.

So we'll cover both. What's going on out there, and what actually matters in your sewing room.

Thanks for being here. Now let's get into it.

In this episode of Sew In The Know, Mike checks in from the sewing world with a look back at BERNINA University, where he was representing Goat Notions, and gives a few well-deserved shout-outs to some great people from the show.

He also talks about the upcoming Sewing Studio Summer Showcase in Hudson, Illinois, a packed event hosted by one of the top BERNINA dealers in the country, with classes, demos, vendors, and a seriously impressive lineup of educators and industry pros.

Then Mike gets into the product that stopped everyone this week: Odif OdiCoat.

After a video from Maddie Kertay of BadAss Quilters Society showed vintage children’s book pages being turned into a flexible, sewable material, OdiCoat suddenly became the product everyone wanted to know about.

Mike breaks down what OdiCoat is, how it works, what kinds of projects it makes sense for, and why it might be worth trying if you make bags, pouches, home decor, craft projects, or anything that needs a waterproof, wipe-clean, oilcloth-style finish.

Because sometimes the best sewing ideas are practical.

And sometimes they are just the right kind of chaos.

In this episode of Sew In The Know, Mike takes a quick spin around the sewing world with a look at the Original Sewing & Quilt Expo headed to Dallas-Irving, Texas.

He talks about why sewing expos still matter, what they reveal about the problems sewists are trying to solve, and why every shiny new tool deserves one very practical question: when would I actually use this?

Then Mike puts that question to work with Ricky Tims’ Stable Stuff Poly, a unique stabilizer that can be torn away or left inside a project. He breaks down what it is, where it can be useful, and why it might earn a place in the sewing room for applique, paper piecing, decorative stitching, quilt marking, machine embroidery, and trapunto.

    Because new is fun.

    Useful is better.

In this first episode of Sew in the Know, Mike kicks things off by talking about what's happening right now in the sewing and embroidery industry — including BERNINA University 2026, one of the biggest dealer events of the year, happening this week in New Orleans.

Mike shares his thoughts on where the industry is headed, what all the new machines and tools are really telling us, and why "new" doesn't always mean "necessary."

He also gets into stabilizer — not just what it is, but how to actually think about it. Because there's a big difference between buying stabilizer and understanding it.

This is episode one. Go easy on him.
