Science is built on evidence, skepticism, and trust—but scientists are still people, and people sometimes make spectacularly bad decisions. In this episode of 4Ps: Plants, Pests, Parasites & People, we look at scientists behaving badly: questionable experiments, manipulated figures, research misconduct, ethical failures, and cases where the science itself became tangled up with the behavior of the people producing it. Some of these stories are clear-cut. Others are much messier. What happens when flawed research practices cast doubt on findings that later turn out to be largely correct? What happens when an experiment may answer an interesting question but never should have been done that way in the first place? And how does science sort out what can still be trusted once that trust has been damaged?
Science can correct itself—but that correction can take years of work, repeated experiments, and the time and effort of a great many other scientists.
