  • Sexual Misconduct at Sea: The Unspoken Problem Shipping Must Face
    Oct 22 2026
Send us Fan MailSexual misconduct, harassment and abuse at sea are not new problems, but much of what happens onboard may never reach a formal reporting system. If maritime wants to create safer, more inclusive careers at sea, understanding what is not being reported may be just as important as understanding what is.In this episode of Sea Views, Julia Gosling is joined by Susanne Justesen, Director of Human Sustainability at the Global Maritime Forum, and Jeremy Sutton, Chief Executive of Swire Shipping and newly announced co-chair of the All Aboard Alliance, to examine the thinking behind Unspoken, an initiative designed to build a clearer picture of abuse and misconduct at sea through the lived experiences of seafarers.Unspoken invites seafarers of all ranks and trades to share their experiences anonymously and confidentially, with a particular focus on sexual misconduct. The initiative is not intended to replace existing grievance procedures, whistleblowing systems or company reporting channels, but to understand the experiences those systems may never capture and use that knowledge to help develop practical global standards for prevention, response and accountability. The discussion also looks closely at psychological safety, because people are unlikely to speak openly if they believe the personal risks of reporting are greater than the potential benefits. Susanne explains why trust in the process matters just as much as trust in colleagues or management, while Jeremy brings the perspective of a major shipping company working to turn industry collaboration into measurable change onboard. The conversation explores how the All Aboard Alliance is bringing maritime companies together to develop shared standards, why sexual misconduct should not be treated solely as a women's issue, how companies can learn from one another, and why recruitment, retention, crew wellbeing and inclusion are not simply moral questions but serious business issues.Jeremy also shares how working with the Alliance changed Swire Shipping's approach to improving gender balance onboard, including a move towards higher concentrations of women on fewer vessels rather than spreading small numbers across a wider fleet. Swire Shipping has set a target for women to represent 20% of its seafarers by 2030, compared with 15% currently.Looking further ahead, Susanne discusses the ambition to develop recognised industry standards around safety, health, inclusion and wellbeing, with the possibility that accountability could eventually extend through the wider maritime supply chain and influence the decisions made by major cargo owners and brands. In this episode:Why traditional reporting systems may capture only part of the pictureHow Unspoken collects anonymous and confidential lived experiencesSexual misconduct, harassment and abuse at seaWhy psychological safety depends on trust in the reporting processWhy Unspoken does not replace existing company reporting channelsHow shipping companies can turn collaboration into practical changeLearn more about the Unspoken initiative and share an experience anonymously and confidentially:https://unspokenproject.orgRead the All Aboard Alliance 2030 Strategy:https://assets.ctfassets.net/gk3lriml...NEWS! • Seafarer Abandonment: Unpaid Wages, Repatriation & Human Cost
    Sep 25 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

🚨 Seafarer abandonment is not simply a contractual dispute. It can mean months without wages, expired contracts, repatriation refused, deteriorating conditions onboard, and families thousands of miles away left without the income they depend upon.

In this episode of Sea Views, hosts Julia Gosling and Adam Parnell are joined by Mohamed Arrachedi, ITF FOC Network Coordinator for the Arab World and Iran at the International Transport Workers’ Federation, for an uncompromising look at one of maritime’s most persistent and disturbing problems.

Mohamed works directly with seafarers facing unpaid wages, Maritime Labour Convention complaints, failed repatriation, unsafe living conditions and abandonment across a region stretching from North Africa through the Middle East and Iran.

This conversation goes beyond the statistics to explain what abandonment actually means under the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC), why a crew does not need to be physically deserted for abandonment to have occurred, and how quickly an unpaid wage or repatriation problem can become something far more serious.

Mohamed also shares the reality behind the cases reaching the ITF, including seafarers waiting months for wages, crews afraid to speak out, ships operating without adequate food, fuel or basic services, and the enormous consequences for families ashore.

The central problem is not necessarily a lack of regulation. It is what happens when existing protections are not enforced.

For seafarers who believe they may have been abandoned, the message throughout this conversation is important: do not wait until the situation becomes desperate before asking for help.

Abandonment affects far more than the individual seafarer. Unpaid wages, delayed repatriation and months trapped in uncertainty can affect entire families whose livelihoods depend on the person working at sea.

The regulations exist. The challenge is making sure they are enforced.

  • Offshore Safety, Human Factors & Life Offshore
    Jul 23 2026

    Send us Fan Mail

Offshore safety is not just about PPE, paperwork, or compliance. It is about how people think, lead, communicate, and look after each other in high-risk environments at sea.

In this episode of Sea Views, host Julia Gosling is joined by Adam Parnell and guest Gordon Foot, MNM FNI - Offshore Client Representative, an offshore operations professional with decades of experience across Royal Navy submarines, oil and gas, subsea work, cable operations, renewables, offshore wind, marine construction, and high-hazard maritime environments.

Gordon shares how a career that began in submarines developed into a wide-ranging life offshore, working with large construction vessels, international teams, evolving technology, and complex operations where safety cannot be treated as a bolt-on. It has to be lived.

The discussion moves from offshore safety culture and lessons learned from major maritime and hydrocarbon incidents to human factors, resilience, self-awareness, leadership, connectivity at sea, seafarer welfare, and why the next generation needs to understand the scale of opportunity within the blue economy.
