  • The Night Form: Complaint From a Bus That Never Ran

The Night Form: Complaint From a Bus That Never Ran

Cold evidence arrived without a witness: a handwritten complaint placed in the public deposit tray at Central Depot describing Route Seven running seventeen minutes late and smelling of diesel on a Tuesday night in November forty-six years earlier - a night before most current staff were born. Who left the form, and why did it report an event the transit authority had long kept out of its files?

In this episode, we present the sequence of discoveries at Central Depot that led staff and a contracted archivist to a puzzling gap in the records, and the single physical form that reopened it - could a document itself be the only remaining trace of something erased from official memory?

    Person: Jeffrey Bowers
    Date: October 19, 2017
Location: Central Depot, Callum City Transit
    Case: OPS COMPLAINTS - ROUTE 7 - 1968-1983
    Author: Jerry Norris

    - The deposit tray was in a public vestibule outside the night office and the tray sat beneath a frosted window with an almost never-raised blind.
    - Jeffrey Bowers had worked the overnight dispatch at Central Depot since 2001, sixteen years on the same shift, and turned forty-four that autumn.
    - The depot was originally built in 1963, expanded in 1979 and 2004, and contained an original service corridor with an unlocked access hatch beneath the frosted window.
    - In September 2017, archivist Jerry Norris opened a box labeled OPS COMPLAINTS - ROUTE 7 - 1968-1983 and found forty-seven original forms, forty-one signed by D. Kowalczyk.
    - The first anomalous item found by Bowers was a yellow, undated handwritten heating note discovered October 19, 2017, describing a problem for equipment that had been replaced in 2009.

  • Jar on the Sill: Tide Chart Appears Sealed in Decades-Old Glass

Jar on the Sill: Tide Chart Appears Sealed in Decades-Old Glass

A dog stopped dead at an ankle-height window and a woman found a corroded jar on the sill: inside, clear water and a laminated tide chart dated eleven days earlier, yet the jar’s lid shows it had not been opened since at least the 1960s. How did a 2009 tide chart come to rest sealed inside a jar manufactured in the 1920s that apparently sat untouched for decades?

In this episode, we follow the timeline of events at the Portsmith Community Center from the first strange basement sounds in August 2008 to the morning Sandra Fitch photographed the jar on October 4, 2009, and we track the documented observations that make the jar’s presence puzzling. What do the building’s history and the maintenance records reveal about this sealed object?

    Person: Sandra Fitch
    Date: October 4, 2009, 6:48 AM
Location: Portsmith Community Center, Keller Inlet waterfront
Case: Sealed jar containing a laminated tide chart printed September 23, 2009
Event: Recurrent basement sound first heard August 2008, logged through 2009

    - The jar was photographed by Sandra Fitch on October 4, 2009 at 6:48 AM.
    - The laminated tide chart inside was printed on September 23, 2009, eleven days before discovery.
    - The jar itself dates from the 1920s and had a corroded lid showing no signs of opening since at least the 1960s.
    - Melvin Cole first heard the sound inside the walls during a sump check in late August 2008 and logged monthly occurrences through 2009.
    - Plumber Walt Siegel inspected the basement on October 14, 2008 and found no active leaks or unusual pipe configurations.

  • Left Glove on the Logbook: The Fire Lookout Who Vanished Four Days

Left Glove on the Logbook: The Fire Lookout Who Vanished Four Days

A woman’s handwriting stops at 10:00 PM and a stove burns dry while a left leather glove with a name stenciled on it lies across the open logbook - the name belongs to a man dead seventy-nine years. Smoke seen at 6:43 AM, no footprints on the trail, and a different propane canister added to the stove - what happened to Darlene Turner in those seventy-two hours?

In this episode, we lay out the timeline, the scene at the Graden Peak lookout, and the inconsistencies found by deputies and Forest Service personnel, ending on the same unanswered question that sent out the volunteer search teams: where did she go?

    Person: Darlene Turner Turner
    Date: September 13-14, 2011
Location: Graden Peak lookout, Garfield County
Status: Missing for three days during search
    Supervisor: Phil Engel

    - Turner had been the Graden Peak warden for eleven seasons and had logged rotations since 2001.
    - Last logbook entry was dated September 13, 2011 at 10:00 PM with wind SW ~12 mph gusting to 18.
    - A fisherman, Troy Phillips, called 9-1-1 at 6:43 AM on September 14 after seeing thin pale smoke on the slope.
    - The pot on the stove was cooked dry and aluminum scorched; stove burner was set to high.
    - The propane canister found was a ten-ounce travel unit nearly full, not the one-pound canister Turner had logged on August 30.
