  • The Man Who Shouldn't Have Been on Widow Notch Shelf
    Oct 20 2026
The Man Who Shouldn't Have Been on Widow Notch Shelf

Fear spikes when the impossible shows up in a family photo: a six-year-old Canon print sent a small-town sergeant scrambling after a dark figure that appears on a rock shelf sixty feet above a woman and vanishes between frames. Who - or what - could have been standing on Widow Notch where no one could have climbed, and why does it appear only in the middle of three photographs?

In this episode, we follow the sequence of events that began with a trailhead register entry and three drugstore prints, tracking the photograph from a storage unit to the Settlers Fork substation and the Saddleback Range to ask whether the image can be explained by human action or something else. What the sergeant and a retired ranger found at the scene raises a single unsettling question: how did anything get onto that moss-slick granite shelf?

    Person: Sharon Lewis
    Date: November 9, 2017
Location: Widow Notch / Saddleback Range near Settlers Fork, Route 112
Item: Canon point-and-shoot photographs printed on 4x6 paper
    Investigator: Sergeant Dale Orosco

    - Sharon Lewis signed the trailhead register at 11:47 AM and was the only name entered that day.
    - The camera used was a six-year-old Canon point-and-shoot that records on a physical memory card.
    - Three frames were taken by a stranger in an orange vest; the unknown figure appears only in the second frame.
    - The rock shelf (Widow Notch) sits roughly sixty feet above the Forest Service marker and is about eight feet wide.
    - Retired ranger Carl Hutchins and Sergeant Orosco concluded the shelf could not be reached from below without equipment or leaving marks, none of which were found.

  • The Grave That Quietly Received Flowers Nobody Could Explain
    Oct 19 2026
The Grave That Quietly Received Flowers Nobody Could Explain

A mason jar of fresh white button chrysanthemums appeared on a grave that had been bare one week earlier, with no footprints in the soft October earth and no county record of surviving family for the man buried there. Who left the flowers at Shepherd's Rest and why did an eighty-one-year-old woman, whose birth was never linked to the buried man, keep the same jar for seventy-five years?

In this episode, we tell how a quiet discovery in a small township connected a retired biology teacher, a long-hidden birth record, and a woman living in a care facility - and why a photograph and a mason jar mattered enough to bring people together. How did a DNA match and a kept jar lead to fresh flowers at a grave?

    Person: Harold Vick
Date: October 2, 2017 (grave bare); October 10, 2017 (flowers found)
Location: Shepherd's Rest cemetery, Millhaven Township
Person: Edna (born summer 1942), age 81 in October 2017
Person: William Holt, retired biology teacher, submitted DNA circa 2013

    - The grave of Harold Vick was bare on Monday, October 2, 2017, according to county contractor Les Burrell's mowing log.
    - A mason jar with white button chrysanthemums and clear water was found on the stone by Faye Morrow around 5:40 p.m, on Tuesday, October 10, 2017.
    - Harold Vick had been buried at Shepherd's Rest since spring 1949 and the county recorded no spouse, no children, and only a niece who died in 1983.
    - A birth in summer 1942 produced a daughter registered under her mother's surname; the father's name was not on the birth record.
    - William Holt submitted his DNA to a genealogical database and received a 91% confidence collateral match to the Vick line, then visited Edna in spring 2017 and showed her a photograph of Harold Vick's grave.

  • The Six-Minute Logbook: How a Lighthouse Called Men Back From Death
    Oct 18 2026
The Six-Minute Logbook: How a Lighthouse Called Men Back From Death

Cold, isolated, and watching a causeway drown, a twenty-four-year-old lighthouse attendant wrote six words in a logbook at 11:47 PM on September 9, 2021 - “Vessel in distress, Channel 16, responding now.” The county’s automated radio log shows no Channel 16 transmission until 11:53 PM, when a vessel four point two miles offshore called in amid sixty-one-mile-per-hour winds - so what bridged that six-minute gap?

In this episode, we follow the sequence of events recorded in the Heron Point logbook and county radio records, the improvised shared antenna circuit between a lighthouse and a snapper boat, and the storm that left two men pulled from the water alive; could a coaxial splice and a passive splitter explain a radio that seemed to speak before it should?

    Person: April Tucker
    Date: September 9, 2021
Location: Heron Point Lighthouse, Calder Inlet, Merritt County
Vessel: Maren G., thirty-two-foot snapper boat
    Wind: sixty-one miles per hour

    - April Tucker wrote “Vessel in distress, Channel 16, responding now” at 23:47 in the Heron Point logbook.
    - The county automated radio log shows the first Channel 16 transmission at 23:53, six minutes after the logbook entry.
    - The calling vessel was recorded four point two miles offshore during the transmission at 23:53.
    - Joe Ferris’s boat, the Maren G., is a thirty-two-foot commercial vessel whose VHF antenna had intermittent SWR spikes.
    - Two men were pulled from the water alive at approximately 02:00 following the storm.
