At some point, a game developer said “maybe less Satan”… and was immediately ignored. From Dante’s Inferno to Diablo, why do video games keep going back to Hell — and why does it keep being so awesome?

From demon-slaying chaos in Devil May Cry to the apocalyptic world of Diablo, video games have a long, unholy obsession with Satan, demons, and the underworld. Inspired (loosely, very loosely) by Dante’s Inferno, these games borrow religious imagery, crank it up to eleven, and sell it back to us with boss fights, demon arms, and the occasional apocalypse.
Along the way, we unpack how this all happened — from Electronic Arts faking Christian outrage in a marketing stunt, to the deeply normal world of Shin Megami Tensei -where God and Lucifer run competing apocalypse cults.
